Carlos Alcaraz vs Jiri Lehecka Preview

Carlos Alcaraz hasn’t done it easy at Queen’s Club where he is yet to face a Top 50 player. Jiri Lehecka has been serving strong in London where I am backing a tie-break in the first set.

Carlos Alcaraz Form

Carlos Alcaraz won the Rotterdam Open in February, his only final appearance on five hard court events. He was almost unstoppable on clay, winning the Monte-Carlo Masters and reaching the Barcelona Open final where he lost to Holger Rune.

The 22-year-old won another title in Rome, defeating Jannik Sinner in the final. He then won the French Open, facing Sinner again in the final where he saved three match points in an epic 5 sets victory.

The Spaniard got past Adam Walton 6-4 7-6 in the first round at Queen’s before saving 10/12 break points in a tough 6-4 6-7 7-5 victory over Jaume Munar. He beat Arthur Rinderknech 7-5 6-4 in the quarter-finals without allowing a break point.

Alcaraz had his serve working again in the semi-finals, saving one break point in a 6-4 6-4 win against Roberto Bautista Agut, winning 77% of his 2nd serves.

Jiri Lehecka Form

Jiri Lehecka had a promising start to the year, winning 13 of his opening 15 matches. He won the Brisbane International and lost to Novak Djokovic in the Australian Open fourth round.

The 23-year-old lost to Jack Draper in the Doha semi-finals but had a poor end to the hard court swing. He competed in five tournaments on clay, his best result coming in Hamburg where he suffered a quarter-final defeat to Tomas Martin Etcheverry.

The Czech started the grass court swing in Stuttgart, beating Benjamin Bonzi and Jan Lennard Struff before a 6-4 6-4 quarter-final defeat against Ben Shelton.

Lehecka didn’t allow a break point in his opening two wins at Queen’s Club, crushing Alex de Minaur 6-4 6-2 and Gabriel Diallo 6-4 6-2. He beat Jacob Fearnley 7-5 6-2 before beating Draper 6-4 4-6 7-5 in the semi-finals, winning 58% of his 2nd serves and saving 5/6 break points against the Brit.

Verdict

Carlos Alcaraz hasn’t faced a Top 50 player at Queen’s Club and should find Jiri Lehecka a big step up in class. I think this will be a close match with a tie-break backed to occur in the first set.
