Rotterdam Open History

The Rotterdam Open was first held in November 1972 and was won by Arthur Ashe. The tournament was not held in 1973 to allow the tournament to switch to a March date. The Rotterdam Open was originally an event on the World Championship Tennis circuit and became part of the Grand Prix tennis circuit in 1978.

The Rotterdam Open has been part of the ATP Tour since 1990. The 1984 Rotterdam Open singles final between Ivan Lendl and Jimmy Connors was interrupted in the 2nd set with Lendl leading 6-0, 1-0. There was a bomb threat with Lendl not prepared to finish the match.

Roger Federer has been a big drawcard at the tournament with a record 115,894 people attending the 2012 Rotterdam Open when Roger Federer returned for the first time in seven years. This attendance record was broken in 2018 when 120,000 spectators attended after Federer accepted a wildcard after a five year absence.

The first Dutch player to win the Rotterdam Open was Tom Okker in 1974. The next Dutch player to win in Rotterdam was Richard Krajicek in 1995.
