The tournament is a WTA 500 event played on outdoor hard courts from 11 to 16 September. It is the 2nd edition being held at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego, United States. 

Eight of the Top 20 players in women's tennis are taking part including Ons Jabeur, Caroline Garcia, Maria Sakkari and Barbora Krejcikova.
