Shanghai Masters Tennis History

The Shanghai Masters tournament was established as the Shanghai Open in 1996 when a professional tennis tournament was held in Shanghai for the first time. In 2002 the tournament was called the Tennis Masters Cup and was won by World No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt.

The Tennis Masters Cup was an ATP International Series tournament that was held at the Shanghai New International Expo Center. In 2005 the Shanghai Masters moved to the Qizhong Forest Sports City Arena.

Hewitt's win prompted the ATP to award Shanghai the rights to hold the tournament from 2005 to 2007. In 2009 the Shanghai Masters was renamed the Shanghai Rolex Masters following a sponsorship deal.

The Shanghai Masters spent four years spent at the Qizhong Forest Sports City Arena, during which time Swiss World No. 1 Roger Federer reached three finals.

In 2009 the Shanghai Masters became an ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event which was then known as the ATP Masters Series. Shanghai was given the spot previously held by the Madrid Open.

The Shanghai Rolex Masters is the centre piece of the Asian swing in the ATP World Tour calendar after the US Open.
