Elise Mertens had an encouraging start to the year, reaching the final in Hobart where she suffered a shock 3 sets defeat to McCartney Kessler.
The 29-year-old beat Viktorija Golubic 4-6 7-6 6-4 in the first round at the Australian Open. She ran into a tough opponent in the second round, going down 6-4 6-2 to World No.6 Jessica Pegula.
The Belgian htrashed Taylor Townsend 6-1 6-0 in her opening match in Singapore. She came from behind to beat Tatjana Maria 6-7 6-3 6-1 before cruising past Camila Osorio 6-4 6-2 in the quarter-finals.
Mertens was too good for Xinyu Wang in the semi-finals, getting through 6-3 6-4 after saving 4/6 break points.
Verdict
Elise Mertens lost the final in Hobart and will be desperate not to suffer a similar fate in Singapore. Ann Li is a dangerous player, but Mertens deserves favouritism.
