The St Petersburg Open began in 1995 and has been held every year since except 2014. The tournament forms part of the ATP 500 events and normally takes place shortly after the US Open in late September. 

Hosted in the Russian city of St Petersburg, the event has seen numerous Russian winners. Home town favourite Yevgeny Kafelnikov won the inaugural event in 1995 followed by Marat Safin in 2000 and 2001. Mikhail Youzhny claimed the title in 2004 with the next Russian to win on home soil being Daniil Medvedev in 2019.

The 2020 St Petersburg Open was originally set to take place in September 2020 but was rescheduled to October because of the coronavirus pandemic.
