The St Petersburg Open started back in 1995 and has run every year since, bar 2014. The tournament forms part of the ATP 250 events and takes place shortly after the US Open in late September. Hosted in the Russian city of St Petersburg the event has seen numerous high profile winners.

Home town favourite Yevgeny Kafelnikov won the inaugural event in 1995 by beating Guillaume Raoux in straight sets. Another famous Russian player Marat Safin took the title in 2000 and 2001. In 2004 Mikhail Youzhny claimed the title and is also the last Russian to win on home soil.
