The St Petersburg Open began in 1995 and normally takes place after the US Open in late September. 

Hosted in the Russian city of St Petersburg, the event has seen numerous high profile winners. Home town favourite Yevgeny Kafelnikov won the inaugural event in 1995. 

Marat Safin, another famous Russian player, took the titles in 2000 and 2001. In 2004 Mikhail Youzhny claimed the title, the next Russian to win on home soil was Daniil Medvedev in 2019.
