Stockholm Open Tennis History
The first Stockholm Open was held in 1969 when the World Championship Tennis organization made a request to Sven Davidson to start a tournament in Sweden. The inaugural Stockholm Open tournament was held in November 1969 in Kungliga tennishallen in Stockholm.
The Stockholm Open remained at the Kungliga tennishallen except from 1989 to 1994 when it was held in the Ericsson Globe Arena. The Stockholm Open was a major ranking tournament of the Grand Prix Tennis Tour between 1970 and 1989 as part of the Grand Prix Super Series.
The Stockholm Open is played on indoor hard courts and features men's singles and doubles tournaments. A women's competition was held at the Stockholm Open in 1975, 1979, and 1980.
From 1990 until 1994 the Stockholm Open was an ATP Championship Series Single Week event. In 1995 the tournament was downgraded from Super 9 status to a ATP World Tour 250 series level event.
The Stockholm Open was played in November until 2001 when the tournament was held in October.
