US Men’s Clay Court Championships History

The US Men’s Clay Court Championships began in 1910 and is an annual ATP men’s tennis tournament. The tournament forms part of the ATP World Tour 250 series. During its 110-year history it has been held at numerous venues across the United States.

The US Men’s Clay Court Championships came to prominence as the Western Lawn Tennis Association lobbied that a National Clay Court Championship would help promote clay court tennis in the West (USA). Clay was cheaper to install and maintain than grass and the USA never had a clay court event before.

The first US Men’s Clay Court Championships were held at the Omaha Field Club as around 5000 watched the final – a lot for 1910. In 1914 the US Men’s Clay Court Championships moved to the Cincinnati Tennis club but the longest stints have taken place at River Forest and Indianapolis.

Between 1970 and 1989 the US Men’s Clay Court Championships formed part of the Grand Prix Tennis Tour.

The early years were dominated by players from the USA with the first non-American to win the US Men’s Clay Court Championships being Pancho Segura in 1944. It took until 1969 to see another non-American win it, this time it was Zeljko Franulovic. Since then we have seen an even spread as more non-Americans have started participating, although the host nation still gets its fair share of winners.

The 2020 US Men’s Clay Court Championships were cancelled due to the Coronavirus.
