Emma Raducanu has been cut to 8-15 (from 8-13) by bookmaker Coral to win the women’s US Open final following strong support for the British teenager in the last 24 hours.
Raducanu, who was a 150-1 outsider with Coral before the tournament began, will cost British bookies a pay-out which runs into the millions. She has yet to drop a set in New York and can be backed at 6-5 to beat her opponent, Leyla Fernandez, in straight sets.
The 18-year-old, who has made the final at Flushing Meadows on her debut, is the firm odds-on favourite with Coral at 4-7 to be named the BBC Sports Personality of the Year in 2021.
“The nation is getting right behind Emma Raducanu ahead of the US Open final. She has caught the imagination of the betting public like we have not seen since the emergence of Andy Murray 15 years ago,” said Coral’s John Hill.
“British bookies are staring down at a pay-out which will run into the millions if Raducanu is able to complete this fairytale story. She was a 150/1 outsider when this tournament began and is now odds-on to lift the trophy at Flushing Meadows,” added Hill.
“In a year where we have had a Euros and Olympics, it is now an 18-year-old from Bromley who is the odds-on favourite in the BBC Sports Personality of the Year betting. She is on the verge of becoming the first British woman to win a Grand Slam since 1977 and if successful, that award will surely go her way,” concluded Hill.
