Naomi Osaka began 2020 with a semi-final defeat at the Brisbane International. She was knocked out in the third round of the Australian Open by Cori Gauff.

Victoria Azarenka withdrew from the Australian Open, playing her first tournament in 2020 at the Monterrey Open. She lost to Tamara Zidansek in the first round.

Azarenka played in the Top Seed Open in Lexington, losing 6-3 6-2 to Venus Williams in the first round.

Azarenka thrashed 16th seed Elise Mertens 6-1 6-0 in the quarter-finals, winning 60-35 points. She backed up with a 1-6 6-3 6-3 win against 3rd seed Serena Williams in the semi-finals.
