Lorenzo Sonego returned to the ATP Tour with first round exits at the Western and Southern Open and US Open. Sonego’s best result in four tournaments on clay was reaching the French Open round of 16.

Sonego lost against Aljaz Bedene in the final qualifier for the Vienna Open. He was given a reprieve and entered the main draw as a lucky loser.

The World No.42 made it count in the first round, beating Dusan Lajovic 6-4 6-3. Sonego beat World No.31 Hubert Hurkacz 7-6 7-6 in the round of 16.

The Italian saved his best performance for his quarter-final clash against Novak Djokovic as he surprised the world No.1 by thrashing him 6-2 6-1. He then overcame Dan Evans 6-3 6-4 in the semi-finals to earn a shot at a second ATP career title.

Andrey Rublev started 2020 by winning the Qatar Open and Adelaide International. He returned from the corona virus induced break with a first round exit at the Western & Southern Open. 

The Russian performed better at the US Open, reaching the quarter-finals where he went down 7-6 6-3 7-6 to Daniil Medvedev. Rublev played three tournaments on clay, beginning with a second round exit to Hubert Hurkacz at the Italian Open.

The 23-year-old bounced back to win the Hamburg European Open after a 6-4 3-6 7-5 win against Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final. Rublev reached the French Open quarter-finals, going down 7-5 6-2 6-3 to Tsitsipas.

Andrey Rublev returned to hard courts at the St. Petersburg Open. He beat Vasek Pospisil, Ugo Humbert, Cameron Norrie and Denis Shapovalov before a 7-6 6-4 win against Borna Coric in the final.

Rublev started the Vienna Open with a 6-3 6-2 win against Norbert Gombos before a walkover against Jannik Sinner. He beat an injured Dominic Thiem 7-6 6-2 in the quarter-finals. He got the better of Kevin Anderson in the semi-finals when the South African retired when trailling 6-4 4-1.
