Angelique Kerber Form

Former champion Angelique Kerber is now on a seven-match winning streak, after having won last week’s Bad Homburg title and reached the third round at Wimbledon.

It did not come easy. After a fairly routine 6-3, 6-4 win over Nina Stojanovic in the first round, Kerber had to battle through a 3-hour, 19-minute clash with Sara Sorribes-Tormo.

Kerber won 7-5, 5-7, 6-4, but it was an absolutely gruelling contest against the Spanish player, who is almost as fit and defensively gifted as Kerber herself. The German also appeared to be suffering from pain or cramp in one of her wrists or forearms.

It will be interesting to see whether the German is able to recover for her next match, but she is one of the fittest players in tennis.

Aliaksandra Sasnovich

Aliaksandra Sasnovich made it past Serena Williams in the first round when the great American was forced to retire after six games.

The streaky Belarusian took full advantage of her good fortune with a 6-4 7-6 victory over Nao Hibino, and is now looking to make the last 16 at Wimbledon for the second time, having done so in 2018 with wins over Petra Kvitova (like Kerber, a former champion).

Sasnovich has only won back-to-back matches at two tournaments this year, but she loves a fast surface and is a superb defender. The opportunity to take on a top player at a Grand Slam often brings out the best in her.
