The 28-year-old lost all four matches on clay and didn’t see much improvement on grass, beaten in the quarter-finals in Birmingham and first round at Eastbourne.

The Czech had a slow start at Wimbledon, getting past Veronika Kudermetova 7-6 6-7 7-5 and Katie Volynets 7-6 7-6. She was winning 6-0 4-3 in the third round when Jessica Bouzas Maneiro retired.

Krejcikova beat Danielle Collins 7-5 6-3 and maintained that form, upsetting Jelena Ostapenko 6-4 7-6 after winning 81% of her 1st serves. She took out former champion Elena Rybakina 3-6 6-3 6-4 in the semi-finals, her serve unbroken in the final two sets.

Jasmine Paolini is playing career best tennis to break into the Top 10. She beat three Top 20 players on her way to winning the title in Dubai.

The 28-year-old impressed at the French Open, beating Elena Rybakina on her way to the final where she lost 6-2 6-1 to Iga Swiatek. She competed in one event on grass, at Eastbourne where she fell to Daria Kasatkina in the semi-finals.

The Italian brought that form to Wimbledon with straight sets wins over Sara Sorribes Tormo, Greet Minnen and Bianca Andreescu. She was 6-3 6-7 5-5 when Madison Keys retired.

Paolini was an underdog against Emma Navarro and made a mockery of those odds, winning 6-2 6-1 after punishing Navarro’s 2nd serve. She then won the longest Wimbledon semi-final in history, overcoming Donna Vekic 2-6 6-4 7-6 in 2 hours and 51 minutes.
