Angelique Kerber, the 2018 Wimbledon champion, is now on an eight-match winning streak and has won 9 of her last 10 Wimbledon matches. But she has played some lengthy matches in the past fortnight.

  • Coco Gauff has yet to drop a set at Wimbledon in 2021
  • Angelique Kerber has won 9 of her last 10 Wimbledon matches

Coco Gauff Form

Coco Gauff has continued to rise since her breakthrough run at Wimbledon in 2019, when she came through qualifying to reach the last 16.

Still just 17, Gauff is 31-11 in 2021, making semifinals in Adelaide and Rome, winning her second career WTA title in Parma and reaching the quarterfinals of the French Open.

Gauff suffered a bit of a surprising collapse in that quarterfinal against Barbora Krejcikova, but she has bounced back well. She played two tough matches in Eastbourne, beating Elise Mertens and losing to Anastasija Sevastova.

So far at Wimbledon Gauff has not dropped a set in wins over Great Britain’s Francesca Jones, former semifinalist Elena Vesnina and Kaja Juvan. Her last two matches have been on Centre Court, where she will play on Monday against Kerber.

Angelique Kerber Form

Former champion Angelique Kerber is now on an eight-match winning streak, after having won last week’s Bad Homburg title and reached the fourth round at Wimbledon.

Neither achievement came easy. Kerber battled through two three-set matches last week in Bad Homburg, and after a routine opening round win over Nina Stojanovic at Wimbledon, she played for 3 hours and 19 minutes against Sara Sorribes-Tormo.

Kerber is supremely fit but she is also 33. She had to go the distance again in the third round, trailing Aliaksandra Sasnovich 1-5 before the match was interrupted by a rain delay.

On the resumption Sasnovich only won two more games as Kerber recorded a 2-6 6-0 6-1 victory.

Verdict

Kerber is a superb grass-court player and is playing great tennis, but Gauff is increasingly showing that she is a force to be reckoned with. She can defend almost as well as Kerber and will have the physical advantage in a long match.
