Felix Auger-Aliassime vs Nick Kyrgios Predictions

A quarterfinalist at Wimbledon in 2014, Nick Kyrgios has reliably provided lengthy clashes at Grand Slams ever since. Felix Auger-Aliassime has won eight of his last ten matches on grass and narrowly beat Kyrgios in their only previous meeting.

This could be an unmissable encounter and certainly looks likely to be a long match.

  • Felix Auger-Aliassime has seen over 39.5 games in 3 of his last 4 Grand Slam matches
  • Felix Auger-Aliassime has lost to unseeded players at the last 3 Grand Slams he has played
  • Felix Auger-Aliassime has failed to reach the last 16 at 6 of the last 8 Grand Slams he has played
  • Nick Kyrgios has seen over 39.5 games in his last 5 Grand Slam matches against seeded players
  • Nick Kyrgios has seen over 39.5 games in 3 of his last 4 Grand Slam matches
  • Nick Kyrgios has won 3 of his last 4 Wimbledon matches by over 3.5 games

Felix Auger-Aliassime has a 1-0 record against Nick Kyrgios.

Auger-Aliassime won 6-7 7-6 7-5 on grass at Queen’s Club in 2019.

Felix Auger-Aliassime Form

Felix Auger-Aliassime has made the second week at two of the last three Grand Slams, doing so at the 2020 US Open and 2021 Australian Open. Both of his Grand Slam campaigns in 2021 ended in defeat to unseeded players, Aslan Karatsev and Andreas Seppi respectively.

Auger-Aliassime has made eight ATP Tour finals in the past three seasons and not won one, which is starting to raise questions about his mentality.

After losing in the first round of the French Open to Seppi, Auger-Aliassime had a good Wimbledon warm-up, reaching the Stuttgart final (losing to Marin Cilic) and making the Halle semifinals (losing to Ugo Humbert). It’s notable that both defeats were at the hands of big-serving, first-strike players.

Auger-Aliassime opened his Wimbledon campaign with a straight-sets victory over Thiago Monteiro. He struggled, however, against Mikael Ymer, and did not look comfortable in a 6-4 4-6 7-6 6-1 victory.

Nick Kyrgios Form

Nick Kyrgios joked that he was a ‘part-time tennis player’ after winning his first-round match, and that is accurate.

The Australian, whose commitment to the game waxes and wanes, played only nine matches in 2020 (like many of his compatriots, he did not leave Australia after the pandemic broke out, which is very reasonable).

He reached the third rounds of the Murray River Open and the Australian Open in February, but did not play again until this week.

Kyrgios won a two-day thriller against Halle champion Ugo Humbert in the first round, 9-7 in the fifth set, and recorded an unusually efficient win over Gianluca Mager in the second round.

Kyrgios’s fitness is always in question but he is playing very well and there are few players with a more dazzling array of offensive, point-ending shots.

I think Kyrgios can win this one as Auger-Aliassime can look quite ordinary when he comes up against top opposition. However, the safer bet is certainly to expect a lengthy match, as Kyrgios’s big serve can keep him in most sets until a tie-break.
