Karen Khachanov Form

Karen Khachanov was a quarterfinalist at the French Open in 2019 and tends to play well on natural surfaces – this is his second time reaching the second week of Wimbledon.

The tall Russian has a big serve and a solid all-round game. It has been a bit of an underwhelming season for him, but he has reached two ATP Tour semifinals.

Khachanov has yet to face a seeded player at Wimbledon this year. He has beaten Mackenzie McDonald, Egor Gerasimov, Frances Tiafoe and Sebastian Korda.

Korda had beaten Dan Evans in the previous round but his match against Khachanov was a mess. The fifth set featured 13 breaks of serve and Khachanov unsuccessfully served for the match several times before finally winning 3-6 6-4 6-3 5-7 10-8.

Denis Shapovalov Form

Denis Shapovalov came into Wimbledon with a 1-3 record at the grass-court major. But he has really impressed with the tennis he has played to reach his first quarterfinal.

After a semifinal run at Queen’s Club, Shapovalov beat Philipp Kohlschreiber in five sets in the first round. He has not dropped a set since.

Shapovalov got a walkover from Pablo Andujar, then produced a very good display to beat Andy Murray 6-4 6-2 6-2.

His fourth-round match was even more impressive. Shapovalov played scintillating tennis and held his nerve to beat 2019 semifinalist Roberto Bautista Agut 6-1 6-3 7-5.

Bautista Agut did not play very well but the erratic Shapovalov played with much more purpose and consistency than we have often seen to get the win.

Verdict

Khachanov’s big serve is likely to help him get at least one set but this should be a win for Shapovalov. The Canadian left-hander has played some of the best tennis of his career to reach this quarterfinal.
