Novak Djokovic vs Matteo Berrettini Predictions

Novak Djokovic takes on Matteo Berrettini in the 2021 men's Wimbledon final. The Serbian is aiming to become the first man since Rod Laver in 1969 to win the first three Grand Slams of the year.

Djokovic hasn’t dropped a set since his first match and has beaten Berrettini in two previous meetings. His experience and ability to target Berrettini’s weaker backhand make him a deserved favourite.

  • Novak Djokovic has seen over 35.5 games in 3 of his last 5 Grand Slam finals
  • Novak Djokovic has won 5 of his last 6 Wimbledon matches by over 5.5 games
  • Novak Djokovic has won 7 of his last 8 Grand Slam finals
  • Matteo Berrettini has seen over 35.5 games in 2 of his last 3 Wimbledon matches
  • Matteo Berrettini has lost by over 5.5 games in all 4 of his Grand Slam matches against top-10 players
  • Matteo Berrettini has lost 4 of his last 5 matches against top-10 players

Novak Djokovic has a 2-0 record against Matteo Berrettini.

Djokovic beat Berrettini 6-2 6-1 at the 2019 ATP Finals and 6-3 6-2 6-7 7-5 at the 2021 French Open.

Novak Djokovic Form

Novak Djokovic is on a 20-match winning streak both at Wimbledon and at Grand Slams in general after beating Denis Shapovalov in straight sets in the semifinals.

Djokovic was not even particularly good against Shapovalov and was still able to win 7-6 7-5 7-5. After going down a break in the first set, he saved the other 10 break points he faced, with his ability to get first serves back into play and force Shapovalov to hit one more ball both proving crucial.

Djokovic, now the second man in history to reach 30 Grand Slam finals, has never lost a Grand Slam final to a player who was playing their first. He has won seven of the last eight he has played and the last four he has played at Wimbledon.

Since losing his first set of Wimbledon to Jack Draper, Djokovic has won 21 consecutive sets.

Matteo Berrettini Form

Matteo Berrettini improved to 11-0 on grass in 2021 and 32-6 this season as a whole by beating Hubert Hurkacz to reach his first Grand Slam final.

Berrettini dropped a set to Hurkacz, just as he had done against Felix Auger-Aliassime in the quarterfinals, but otherwise was largely in control of a 6-3 6-0 6-7 6-4 victory. Berrettini’s booming serve and big forehand were both very effective and he protected his weaker backhand wing well.

Hurkacz was not very good for most of the match, however, and did not produce the same form he did to beat Roger Federer in the quarterfinals.

This will be Berrettini’s fifth match against a top-10 player at a Grand Slam. The Italian has lost all of them, two of them in straight sets.

Djokovic looks in control of his game and has an immense experience advantage over Berrettini. It is difficult to imagine the World no. 1 being pushed too hard.

Berrettini’s big serve should help him get a set, but Djokovic can expose the Italian’s weaker backhand and win his 20th Grand Slam.
