Paula Badosa Form

Paula Badosa has been tipped as a future top star since juniors but has only begun to really deliver on her potential in 2021. Badosa is now 26-9 in 2021; since the start of the clay-court season, she has won 18 of 22 matches.

A semifinalist in Charleston, Madrid and Lyon in 2021, Badosa won her first title in Belgrade before reaching the quarterfinals of the French Open, where she narrowly lost to Tamara Zidansek.

Badosa lost a tight three-set match to Elina Svitolina in Eastbourne. At Wimbledon, she beat Yulia Putintseva in straight sets but had to battle against very tough three-set matches against Aliona Bolsova and Magda Linette.

Six of Badosa’s last seven matches have gone to three sets.

Karolina Muchova Form

Karolina Muchova was unseeded when she beat Anett Kontaveit and Karolina Pliskova to reach the quarterfinals of Wimbledon during her breakthrough 2019 season.

Muchova, like many, struggled to play much in 2020 but started 2021 in superb style by beating Ashleigh Barty to make the semifinals of the Australian Open. The Czech skipped American hard courts and her best clay result came in Madrid, where she beat Naomi Osaka.

Muchova lost in the third round of the French Open but she has a superb game for grass, full of variety and she loves attacking the net. She has had to play three former Wimbledon quarterfinalists in a row: Zhang Shuai, Camila Giorgi and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, and beaten them all dropping one set.

Like Badosa, Muchova is in great form and has survived plenty of tough lengthy matches.

Verdict

Badosa and Muchova are both on excellent form. Muchova has the more obvious grass-court game and possibly less fatigue issues, but Badosa’s confidence is so high and her attacking game so potent that she is very unlikely to go down without a fight.
