Sonay Kartal’s path to the second week at Wimbledon has been relatively smooth. She opened with a three-set win over a physically struggling Jelena Ostapenko, then followed up with straight-set victories over Viktoriya Tomova and Diane Parry, both ranked outside the top 100.

This run marks the best result of her career at Wimbledon and at any Grand Slam, surpassing her third-round finish here last year as a qualifier.

Coming into the tournament, Kartal had not recorded back-to-back wins since Indian Wells in March and had won just two of five matches during the grass-court swing.

Her only previous tour-level quarterfinal came in Monastir last year, where she won seven matches as a qualifier to claim her maiden title.

A win on Sunday would make her the new British No. 1, as she currently sits just four places behind Katie Boulter in the live rankings.

Despite ongoing fitness concerns and some inconsistency, Pavlyuchenkova has now won six of her seven matches during the grass-court swing, making this the most successful grass season of her career in terms of match wins.

She has played a limited schedule this year due to injury, with her only other deep run coming at the Australian Open, where she reached the quarterfinals.
