Tennys Sandgren vs Alexander Zverev Predictions

Alexander Zverev has not had good results in recent years at Wimbledon. He had a very good clay season, but went 1-1 on grass in the run-up to The Championships.

Zverev is still the likely winner but he does not have the comfort on grass that he does on clay, and Sandgren is a dangerous player.

Tennys Sandgren Form

The last time Tennys Sandgren played Wimbledon, he was able to reach the round of 16, defeating two seeded players on the way.

Sandgren is 4-4 vs top-10 players at Grand Slams – an impressive record – and he was an Australian Open quarterfinalist in 2018 and 2020.

However, Sandgren is one of the players who have struggled for form since the pandemic began. He ended 2020 on a five-match losing streak and is just 5-12 in 2021.

Since losing to Novak Djokovic in the first round of the French Open, Sandgren has only played two matches, beating Jaume Munar in Mallorca but losing to Casper Ruud. He scored a 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-1, 6-3 victory over Norbert Gombos to set up the second-round clash with Alexander Zverev.

Alexander Zverev Form

Alexander Zverev managed to avoid a repeat of last year’s first-round exit from Wimbledon. He beat world no. 124 Tallon Griekspoor 6-3, 6-4, 6-1 to reach the second round.

Zverev has a 26-15 career record on grass and has reached the Halle final twice, but Wimbledon is the only Grand Slam he has yet to make the quarterfinals of.

After a superlative clay-court season, which saw him win Madrid and make the semifinals of the French Open, Zverev was upset by eventual champion Ugo Humbert in Halle. Griekspoor did not provide enough of a test to see what kind of form the German is in on grass – Sandgren should provide a much sterner test.

Verdict

Zverev has won his last eight Grand Slam matches against unseeded players, but he has also struggled at Wimbledon in recent years. Sandgren is out of form but plays well against top players and he is likely to be able to make it a competitive match against Zverev.
