Winston Salem Open Tennis History

The tournament started in 1981 as an exhibition tournament played by only four players on Long Island’s Jericho hamlet and was known as the Hamlet Challenge Cup. Its early years saw some high profile winners including Ivan Lendl (1984, 1985, 1986 and 1989) and an 18-year-old Andre Agassi (1988).

In 1990 the event entered the ATP Tour and was sponsored by numerous companies before moving to New Haven in 2005. There the tournament grew further and attracted some of tennis’ biggest names as Stefan Edberg, Yevgeny Kafelnikov, Magnus Norman and Lleyton Hewitt added their names to the list of champions.

The move to New Haven also meant that it would merge with the women’s tournament and this created the first large joint ATP-WTA tournament leading up to the US Open. That was until 2011 when the ATP split and moved to Winston-Salem to create the Winston-Salem Open.

Since then the Winston-Salem Open has continued to flourish. Top players continue to accept invitations to the event as they search for form in the lead-up to the US Open. Some recent winners include John Isner, Kevin Anderson and Daniil Medvedev.
