WTA Dubai Tennis Championships History

The Dubai Tennis Champions was first played in 1993 an ATP event. In 2001 the WTA Tour joined the Dubai Tennis Championships with great success.

The WTA Dubai Tennis Championships began as a Premier tournament on the WTA calendar and became a Premier 5 tournament in 2009. It only lasted three years before moving back to a Premier tournament in 2012.

The tournament has fluctuated between the two types of events on a number of occasions and is currently considered a Premier tournament.

In 2005 the Dubai Tennis Championships became only the third professional tennis tournament to offer equal prize money for the men and women, and the first non Grand Slam after the US Open and Australian Open.
