Aryna Sabalenka vs Coco Gauff Preview

Aryna Sabalenka aims to extend her Madrid supremacy and capture a third title at the event. The world No. 1 has remained formidable, reaching the final for the fourth time in five years.

Gauff has delivered one of her most commanding performances of the season, culminating in a statement victory over defending champion Iga Swiatek in the semifinals.

Sabalenka holds the pedigree at this event, but Gauff's growing momentum and recent head-to-head advantage make this an intriguing showdown.

Aryna Sabalenka Overview

  • Current rank: 1
  • Career high rank: 1
  • ELO rank: 1
  • Season record: 30-5
  • Madrid record: 22-4 (Champion in 2021 and 2023)
  • Clay-court final record: 2-7 (both wins in Madrid)

Aryna Sabalenka Form

Aryna Sabalenka overcame Elina Svitolina in the semifinals, ending her opponent's 11-match winning streak with a clinical 6-3, 7-5 victory.

The Belarusian had earlier navigated tough encounters in this campaign, rallying from a set down against Elise Mertens and edging past Marta Kostyuk in two tiebreaks.

Madrid has long been Sabalenka’s strongest clay-court event, with both of her clay titles coming at this tournament.

She defeated then-reigning world No. 1 Ashleigh Barty and Iga Swiatek in the 2021 and 2023 finals, respectively, but lost to Swiatek in her bid to win this tournament for the third time in 2024.

Overall, she has played 12 finals since the start of 2024 but converted only half of them into titles.

Regardless, the world No. 1 will be excited to be playing her fourth consecutive final after winning the title in Miami and settling for runner-up in Indian Wells and Stuttgart.

Coco Gauff Overview

  • Current rank: 4
  • Career high rank: 2
  • ELO rank: 4
  • Season record: 19-6
  • Madrid Open record: 5-4 prior to 2025
  • Clay-court final record: 1-1

Coco Gauff Form

Coco Gauff started her Madrid campaign with a shock when she lost a 0-6 set to Dayana Yastremska but has since surged through the draw with 10 consecutive set wins.

Her run includes brilliant wins over Belinda Bencic and Mirra Andreeva, two immensely in-form players.

She dismantled second seed and defending champion Iga Swiatek, 6-1, 6-1, in just 64 minutes in the semifinals, extending her turnaround in their rivalry to three consecutive wins.

Gauff is finding her groove that won her titles at the China Open and WTA Finals late last year and delivered a nine-match winning streak at the start of this season.

She has contested two clay-court finals, winning Parma in 2021 and finishing runner-up to Swiatek at Roland-Garros in 2022.

Verdict

Sabalenka’s experience at Madrid makes her the most confident of the two players. However, it may not amount to much given five of their nine clashes have gone to the deciding set.

A three-setter between the hard-hitters looks a very likely outcome.
