Diana Shnaider vs Iga Swiatek Preview

Iga Swiatek seeks to extend her dominance in Madrid as she faces Diana Shnaider in the fourth round.

The defending champion entered the tournament looking for redemption, having not been to a final since 2024 Roland-Garros. The Russian, on the other hand, is trying to dispel her poor start to 2025 and has done very well in Madrid so far.

In their first meeting, Swiatek is expected to deploy her fearsome clay-court pedigree to demolish the 21-year-old breakout star.

Diana Shnaider Form

Diana Shnaider lost in the first round when she made her debut in Madrid last year.

This time, she has made an impressive start after picking up new coach Dinara Safina. Shnaider steamrolled past Katie Volynets, 6-1, 6-2, and unranked Anastasija Sevastova, 6-0, 6-0.

Her career reached new heights, breaking into the top-15 rankings in 2024 after winning four WTA titles across all three surfaces and reaching semifinals in Toronto, Seoul, and Tokyo.

Shnaider arrived in Madrid in difficult circumstances, having failed to win back-to-back matches in her last seven tournaments.

She continues to search for her first quarterfinal appearance since Adelaide earlier this season and her second at WTA 1000 level (2024 Toronto).

Shnaider has beaten a top-2 player once in her young career when she knocked out Coco Gauff in Toronto last year.

  • Career high rank: 1
  • ELO rank: 2
  • Season record: 24-7

Iga Swiatek Form

Iga Swiatek reasserted herself with a straight-sets win against Linda Noskova, improving her head-to-head against the Czech to 6-1.

This convincing victory follows the rather difficult comeback win over Alexandra Eala, whom she lost to in the Miami quarterfinals a few weeks ago.

Swiatek is no stranger to success in Madrid, having reached the final in 2023 and lifted the title in 2024 with a gritty third-set tiebreak win over Aryna Sabalenka in the final.

Her 2024 clay-court season was another sensational affair, delivering a 26-2 record and earning titles in Rome and Roland-Garros, alongside a bronze medal at the Paris Olympics.

The former world No. 1 has been facing tougher and tougher questions from the tour and has been unable to reach a final since winning her fourth Roland-Garros title last year.

Nonetheless, she has consistently made deep runs, reaching quarterfinals or semifinals in all six tournaments in the lead-up to Madrid.

Verdict

Iga Swiatek looks to maintain her Madrid dominance as she meets Diana Shnaider in the fourth round. The defending champion, seeking redemption after a quiet 2025, faces a rising Shnaider, who’s found form in Madrid. Swiatek is favoured to use her clay-court expertise to overpower the 21-year-old.
