Moyuka Uchijima Form

Moyuka Uchijima held a single career win on clay courts before the month of April.

The Japanese player has since transformed her reputation on tour in recent weeks, reaching her second consecutive quarterfinal after the run in Rouen.

Two weeks ago, she joined the last eight at the Rouen WTA 250 event after completing dramatic comeback wins against two outside top-200 players.

She has shifted gears in Madrid, overcoming far more established opponents in her stunning run.

After beating Robin Montgomery and former world No. 2 Ons Jabeur in deciding sets, Uchijima delivered straight-set upsets over world No. 3 Jessica Pegula and 21st seed Ekaterina Alexandrova.

Despite limited success on tour in previous years, the 23-year-old has steadily climbed through the rankings, helped by her three W100 titles in the previous season.

Two of those W100 titles came on the clay courts of Spain when she triumphed in Zaragoza and Madrid in the months of April and May, respectively.

She still has new grounds to break and potentially join her first WTA semifinal and confirm her top-50 debut.

Elina Svitolina Overview

  • Current rank: 17
  • Career high rank: 3
  • ELO rank: 12
  • Season record: 21-6
  • Career Madrid record: 3-9 before 2025
  • Career clay-court quarterfinal record: 11-7

Elina Svitolina Form

Elina Svitolina has finally unlocked the magic formula at the Madrid Open after years of struggles, reaching her maiden quarterfinal at the tournament.

She had suffered first- or second-round exits in each of her previous nine appearances but has been flawless this fortnight.

She knocked out Elena Rybakina and Maria Sakkari with identical 6-3, 6-4 scorelines, securing three straight-set victories in total.

Her clay-court form has been outstanding, extending her record on the surface to 10-0 in 2025 (including BJK Cup qualifiers), which is nothing unusual for a player with seven clay-court titles.

The 30-year-old returned to the tour from maternity leave two years ago and has steadily rebuilt her top-20 status.

She made deep runs in several events over the past 12 months, reaching quarterfinals at Wimbledon, Monterrey, the Australian Open, and Indian Wells, but failed to reach the semifinals in all four.

In Rouen, she finally reached her first semifinal since January 2024 and later won her first title since 2023 Strasbourg.

She is a two-time champion at the Italian Open, the only other clay-court WTA 1000 event on the calendar, and is expected to douse the breakthrough of her surging opponent.

Verdict

Moyuka Uchijima has stunned the field with wins over three top-30 players to reach her biggest quarterfinal yet.

Svitolina, in strong form and finally clicking in Madrid, will be tough to stop, although Uchijima’s hot streak keeps things interesting.
