2019 WTA Zhengzhou Open Top Contenders

Elina Svitolina (5.00)

The second seed and bookies favourite, Elina Svitolina has recovered from her mid-season blip brought on by injurie to reach successive Grand Slam semi-finals at Wimbledon and the US Open. The Ukrainian’s game is in a great place and she can live up to her top billing to win her first title of the season.

Karolina Pliskova (5.00)

Karolina Pliskova, the top seed, has been in solid form in recent weeks and has reached the quarter-finals at the Cincinnati Masters and Canadian Open before reaching the fourth round of the US Open. While Pliskova’s form has been good, she has stumbled against competent opposition, and at these odds, I will be avoiding the Czech this week.

Sofia Kenin (7.00)

Sofia Kenin is enjoying an impressive breakout season, winning her first two WTA Tour titles, before reaching successive semi-finals in Toronto and Cincinnati. Her US Open campaign ended in the third round to 10th seed Madison Keys. Kenin is in superb form and should enjoy a successful week at the Zhengzhou Open.

Kiki Bertens (9.00)

Kiki Bertens has been excellent on clay this season, but the Madrid Open champion struggled during the American hardcourt swing. Based on her current form and her relatively short odds, the Dutchwoman does not represent good value at the Zhengzhou Open.

Aryna Sabalenka (9.00)

Aryna Sabalenka enters the Zhengzhou Open as the US Open champion – but as part of a doubles team with Elise Mertens after suffering a second round defeat in the singles. A final appearance at the Silicon Valley Classic was the one highlight of an ordinary recent run of form, and given the strength of the field this week, I believe there is better value than Sabalenka.

Angelique Kerber (9.00)

It has been a tough season for Angelique Kerber as she continues to battle for form following injury. But the German is one of the elite-level players in the field and if she can find her form, she can contend this week.

2019 WTA Zhengzhou Open Outsiders

Petra Martic (13.00)

Petra Martic is enjoying the best season of her career and enters the 2019 WTA Zhengzhou Open after reaching the US Open fourth round where she gave a good account of herself in defeat to Serena Williams. The Croatian has the form and skills to perform well this week.

Caroline Garcia (21.00)

Caroline Garcia has not been in great form heading into the 2019 WTA Zhengzhou Open, with four straight defeats. However, the Frenchwoman has played her best tennis on Asian hardcourts, with three of her seven career titles coming in China.

Kristina Mladenovic (29.00)

Kristina Mladenovic is starting to find better form in the singles game having slumped from the top-10 in the WTA rankings to her current position at No. 54. She has the power and attacking instincts to cause problems this week.
