Eurovision 2020 cancelled due to coronavirus

The 2020 Eurovision Song Contest has been called as a result of the global coronavirus pandemic.

The annual event was scheduled to take place in Rotterdam this May.

Eurovision officials had recently said they would delay making a final decision until April.

But in a statement posted on the official Eurovision Twitter account on March 17th, organisers explained that they felt they had no alternative but to cancel the show.

"It is with deep regret that we have to announce the cancellation of the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 in Rotterdam," a statement read.

Options for Eurovision organisers were thought to have included holding the live shows without an audience, or even basing the vote - and result - on pre-taped performances, as alternatives to cancelling the contest completely.

The European Broadcasting Union is now planning to hold talks with officials in Rottenham with a view to the Dutch city hosting the contest in 2021.
