Betting Preview

William Hill round betting odds have pencilled in McGregor in round one as 7/4 favourite, followed by McGregor in round two at 9/2. All other eventualities are trading at double-figure prices with the exception of points victories for either combatant.

The slew of first-round stoppages that peppered and powered the UFC ascent of ‘The Notorious’ have slowed down markedly in recent years. Three of his first four wins for UFC matches came before the end of the opener and six of his first seven had no need for a third round.

However, since his sensational 13-second KO of Jose Aldo in December 2015, all four of McGregor’s octagon outings have gone to a second stanza or further. Of those he lost two, while a third went to points.

The only one of the four McGregor won in the second round was at lightweight against Eddie Alvarez. He faces Cowboy back up at welter, where his record reads one second-round loss and one points win in two clashes with Nate Diaz.

Given the question marks that remain over the Dubliner’s ability to make his power tell at the 170lb limit, bet365 round betting wagers of over 1.5 rounds at 8/11 and over 2.5 rounds 13/8 appeal.

Having been around for ages but lost his only UFC title fight, Cerrone can be considered similar in terms of overall quality and standing to Diaz, but he hasn’t proven as durable.

Unlike the Stockton slugger, who has only been stopped with blows once (not counting a doctor’s stoppage last time out) Cerrone has six KO/TKO losses on his UFC resume.

As a result over 1.5 rounds looks the best total rounds bet, being a better price than the McGregor stoppage win (4/9).

McGregor v Cerrone prediction: Conor’s fists end Cowboy’s night

Four of the six KO/TKO defeats copped by the Cowboy in UFC have come in his last ten fights, which suggests that the veteran of 50 MMA battles is becoming less durable.

Admittedly, the earlier of the two such losses did come by a doctor’s stoppage, but there can little quibbling with his most recent KO at the mitts of Justin Gaethje.

William Hill's exact method of victory market provides the ideal opportunity to back the widely forecast McGregor stoppage at a pleasing price.

The ‘exact’ element of the market refers to the particular method by which ‘The Notorious’ wins, as determined by UFC stats.com – by guillotine choke (80/1) for example.

Of McGregor’s 21 stoppage wins in MMA, all bar four have come by way of KO/TKO via punches. Backing the Irishman to end things early with his fists is the way to play at odds of 4/5, with boxing easily the most deadly weapon in his skillset.
