Zhang Weili vs Rose Namajunas Predictions & Tips

The bookies have made Zhang Weili a moderate favourite and I think they are right.

Rose Namajunas represents a tough test for the champion but it is one she can pass.

Zhang is relentless inside the Octagon and eventually that aggressiveness and her power could be too much for ‘Thug Rose’ to deal with.

A late stoppage win or a decision success for the Chinese star appears to be on the cards.

  • Weili Zhang is 21-1, winning 21 straight fights after losing her debut
  • Rose Namajunas is 4-2 in her last six fights
  • 17 of Zhang’s 21 wins have come by stoppage – 10 via KO/TKO and seven by submission
  • Namajunas has been stopped twice in her career
  • Zhang lands 6.38 significant strikes per minute and lands 48% of her strikes
  • Zhang has never been taken down in her UFC career
  • Zhang has never been knocked out (her one loss came via decision)

Zhang Weili Form

Zhang Weili’s professional debut may have ended in defeat, but it has been all uphill since then.

‘Magnum’ has reeled off 21 straight victories in her career to take her pro record to 21-1, and her rise to the top of the UFC’s strawweight division was swift and impressive after her debut in August 2018.

Her UFC debut did not produce any fireworks as she bested Danielle Taylor over three rounds, but she made an impression in her second outing.

The 31-year-old Chinese fighter took out Jessica Aguilar with a first-round armbar and then added another notable name to her list of victims as she beat Tecia Torries on the scorecards.

That win over Torres landed Zhang a UFC title shot just 12 months after her debut for the company, and she took her shot in emphatic fashion.

‘Magnum’ needed only 42 seconds to knock out Jessica Andrade and end her reign.

Then, in her first defence of the crown, Zhang claimed the biggest scalp of her career so far as she earned a split decision win over former champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk.

Rose Namajunas Form

Rose Namajunas has gone 4-1 in her last five fights but it would not be unfair to say that her career has stalled in recent years.

‘Thug Rose’ pulled off one of the biggest surprises in recent memory when she knocked out Joanna Jedrzejczyk inside a round to become strawweight champion in 2017, but she has fought just once a year since then.

She successfully defended the crown against the former champion in 2018 only to spend the next several months on the sidelines due to a spinal problem.

When she returned to action in 2019 she lost the belt to Jessica Andrade. Namajunas dominated the opening round only to be knocked out by a slam in the second period.

Her next outing, over 12 months later, would see Namajunas get a shot at revenge.

Despite being bloodied and bruised during the five-round tussle, ‘Thug Rose’ was able to get the nod from two  judges and that victory was enough to earn her a shot at becoming a two-time champion.
