The upcoming match between St Kilda Saints and West Coast Eagles at Marvel Stadium is a crucial opportunity for the Saints to improve their 2-4 record. St Kilda have consistently been in close games and will aim to control the match through strategic territorial dominance. The Eagles, also at a 2-4 record, struggle with converting forward entries into points. The low-scoring, defensive approach favored by St Kilda is expected to suffocate the Eagles, with Jack Sinclair and Jack Higgins likely to be instrumental in the Saints' success.

St Kilda Saints vs West Coast Eagles Preview

St Kilda enjoy a golden opportunity to improve on their win-loss record of 2-4 when they take on the West Coast Eagles at Marvel Stadium on Sunday.

The Saints have endured a frustrating run, consistently finding themselves in tight contests but falling just short, including a one-point loss to Adelaide Crows last week. They will be wary of the Eagles, who claimed the most recent head-to-head.

West Coast also sit at 2-4, but their recent performances highlight a side struggling to generate scoreboard pressure. With Ross Lyon at the helm, expect St Kilda to turn this into a low-scoring, territory-based battle, with the total points under firmly in play and the Saints to control the game.

The key tactical theme here is control. St Kilda’s will look to tighten up around clearance and defensive stoppages and dominate territory, particularly through their half-back line and midfield connection. Jack Sinclair is in elite form and will again be the primary distributor, while Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera adds drive and composure.

West Coast’s competed well in patches against Fremantle last weekend but their inefficiency going forward and inability to capitalise on inside 50 opportunities remains a major concern.

The Round 7 match points strongly towards a controlled, low-scoring contest, with St Kilda suffocating the Eagles and grinding out a result. Jack Higgins will be one of a few that will land multiple goals, while Jack Sinclair should find a stack of the footy

  • West Coast have averaged just 50 points in the past three rounds.
  • St Kilda are averaging 86 points per game this season.
  • Jack Sinclair has averaged 34.5 disposals in his past two matches against West Coast.
  • Jack Higgins kicked five goals the last time he played against West Coast and comes off four against Adelaide.

Head to Head

West Coast chalked up their only win of the 2025 season when 28-point winners at Optus Stadium in Round 10. The Saints had won the four matches prior and were 72-point winners the last time the two clashed at Marvel Stadium.

Standout performances in recent meetings have come from:

  • Jack Sinclair (St Kilda) – 38 and 31 disposals in his last two against West Coast and 30+ in three of his past four.
  • Liam Duggan (West Coast) – 25+ disposals in two of his past three.
  • Jack Higgins (St Kilda) – five goals in his last outing against West Coast.

St Kilda Saints Form Analysis

St Kilda come in with a 2-4 record after their narrow loss to Adelaide. A defining feature of their season has been how tight their matches are, with five of six decided by 14 points or fewer. Even in their heavier loss to Brisbane, they were within striking distance deep into the final quarter.

Against Adelaide, they started strongly and controlled large parts of the game before being overrun through centre bounce and defensive stoppage issues. Once they regained territory late, they were able to claw back, highlighting their ability to respond in-game.

Jack Sinclair continues to drive their ball movement, collecting 35 disposals last week and going 30+ in four of six matches this season. Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera has also been a consistent contributor, while Jack Higgins has provided a reliable scoring threat.

Returning to Marvel Stadium suits St Kilda’s style. They have won three of their past four at the venue, with most games turning into tight, contested affairs, aligning perfectly with their preferred method.

St Kilda Saints Team News

Jack Macrae is pushing for a recall after strong VFL form, while Dougal Howard and Angus Hastie are also in the mix.

West Coast Eagles Form Analysis

West Coast have dropped off after consecutive wins earlier in the season, suffering a heavy 56-point loss to Fremantle in their most recent outing.

They managed just five goals in that match and have averaged only 50 points across the past three rounds. While they showed some competitiveness around stoppage and contested ball, their inability to convert forward entries remains a major issue.

Defensively, they struggle to handle opposition forward structures, particularly against taller setups, and were punished for turnovers in dangerous areas.

Tom McCarthy has been a bright spot, picking up 28 disposals in his past two matches while Elliot Yeo showed positive signs in his return. However, the lack of midfield depth and consistent ball winners continues to limit their ability to control games.

West Coast Eagles Team News

There were no injuries out of the Derby. Elliot Yeo returned from a groin injury and performed well, adding experience around the ball.

Jack Hutchinson and Jack Graham are pushing for selection, while Malakai Champion and Tom Gross have impressed at WAFL level.
