Horse Racing History
Horse racing dates back to around 4500 BC among the nomadic tribesmen of Central Asia, the first people to domesticate horses. Horse Racing has existed since the beginning of recorded history and was an organised sport for many major civilizations around the world.
The ancient Greek Olympics featured events for chariot and mounted horse racing. Horse Racing was also popular in the Roman Empire.
The origins of modern Horse Racing can be traced to the 12th century when English Knights returned from the Crusades with fast Arab horses. Arab stallions were in high demand for their speed and imported and bred to English mares to produce horses that possessed both speed and endurance.
Gambling has always been associated with Horse Racing as the upper classes would wager privately on races between the fastest horses.
Horse Racing began to become a professional sport in England during the reign of Queen Anne (1702-1714). Multi-horse races were developed with spectators becoming part of the events.
Racecourses emerged across England with prize money introduced. Prize money made breeding and owning horses for racing increasingly profitable. The sport required a central governing authority which led to the Jockey Club being formed at Newmarket in 1750.
The Jockey Club wrote the rules of horse racing and sanctioned racecourses to conduct meetings. Specific races to tests excellence, speed and endurance were introduced including the 2,000 Guineas, Epsom Derby, St. Leger Stakes, 1,000 Guineas and Epsom Oaks.
The Jockey Club regulated breeding with James Weatherby tracing the pedigree of every racehorse in England. In 1791, Weatherby published the General Stud Book.
From 1793 the Weatherby family have recorded the pedigree of every descendant of those racehorses in the General Stud Book.
British settlers brought horses and horse racing to America with the first racetrack established on Long Island in 1665. The sport was a popular but organised horse racing didn't exist until after the Civil War in 1868 when gambling on horse racing exploded.
By 1890 there were 314 racetracks operating across the United States. The American Jockey Club was established in 1894.
In the early 1900s racing in the United States was almost eliminated by anti-gambling sentiment that led almost all states to ban bookmaking. By the end of World War I, prosperity and star horses including Man o' War brought spectators back to racetracks with the sport flourishing until World War II.
It lost popularity during the 1950s and 1960s but saw a resurgence in the 1970s thanks to standout horses including Secretariat, Seattle Slew, and Affirmed that all won the American Triple Crown (the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness and the Belmont Stakes).
Horse racing is also a popular sport in Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Canada, Great Britain, Ireland, Middle East and South America.
