The big betting race on ITV on Saturday afternoon is the Ayr Gold Cup. This race boasts a rich history dating back over 200 years, and 25 top sprinters will enter the stalls ahead of Saturday's renewal.

Here's our guide to the 2026 Ayr Gold Cup, including the latest odds, some key trends and our best betting tips.

2025 Ayr Gold Cup Trends

  • 19 of the last 19 winners had run at least 4 times that season
  • 19 of the last 19 winners had run within the last 35 days
  • 17 of the last 19 winners ran at Class 2 level or above last time out (Other 2 both won at Class 3 level)
  • 16 of the last 19 winners were four, five or six-years-old
  • 15 of the last 19 winners weighed between 8-12 and 9-05
  • 15 of the last 19 winners didn't win last time out
  • 14 of the last 19 winners were drawn in stall 10 or wider
  • 13 of the last 19 winners rated between 98 and 105
  • 13 of the last 19 winners went off at 10/1 or longer

Run Boy Run returns to defend his crown, and George Wood's mount has been handed one of the widest draws in stall 23. Richard Spencer's handicapper emerged from stall six when he won last year, and four of the first five to cross the line were drawn in stall eight or lower.

Despite what the above trends suggest, a low draw isn't an automatic negative – it just depends on where the pace in the race is positioned, and potential front-runners were placed both high and low when Thursday's draw was made.

2026 Ayr Gold Cup Ante-Post Tip - Ardisia

ARDISIA (20/1) was my ante-post Ayr Gold Cup selection at 28/1, and talented three-pound claimer Warren Fentiman has been booked to ride Hugo Palmer's soft-ground-loving gelding.

Ardisia came into his own during the wet autumn we endured 12 months ago. Hugo Palmer's gelding bolted up in a nursery handicap during this very meeting before following up in the Listed Two Year Old Trophy at Redcar. Ardisia then almost upset Mission Central in the two-year-old conditions race on Champions Day at Ascot before struggling on his final juvenile outing at the Breeders' Cup.

From his lofty mark of 108, Palmer was forced to run Ardisia in plenty of competitive Pattern races during the first half of this season and tried him over seven furlongs on a couple of occasions. Ardisia was largely uncompetitive, but did finish third in the Surrey Stakes at Epsom on the only occasion he encountered a bit of cut in the ground.

Back on soft ground and back in handicap company at Goodwood last month, Ardisia produced his best performance of the season. Oisin Murphy's mount raced in a small group of three down the centre of the track and pounded home in the final two furlongs to finish a length behind Flash Harry in second.

Fentiman's claimer reduces Ardisia's burden to just 8-12. The 18-year-old might have to choose which side to race on after a central draw in stall 13, but if Ardisia breaks well and travels early on, he should fancy his chances.

2026 Ayr Gold Cup Tip 2 - Pellitory

One to consider at a massive price is PELLITORY (50/1). David O'Meara is yet to run his recruit over six furlongs, but his recent form over seven has been severely underestimated by the bookmakers.

Pellitory bumped into the classy Northern Express at York in July before bolting up in a competitive Class 3 handicap at Haydock, thrashing Glorious Goodwood winner Crimson Spirit by three lengths. O'Meara's gelding then returned to Goodwood to run in the £52k Money Back Handicap, finishing a good third behind Forty Years On and Fondo Blanco.

The two rivals I've just mentioned ran in Group company next time out. Forty Years On was slightly disappointing when only fourth in the Sceptre Fillies' Stakes, having been backed into 5/4, while Fondo Blanco ran a cracker to lose out by less than a length in the Superior Mile at Haydock.

Pellitory won twice on soft ground during his time with James Owen and acquitted himself well in two Listed races over six furlongs at the back end of last season. Danny Tudhope's mount remains on the same mark of 98, and a tongue-tie goes on for this test of speed. If the ground is particularly testing on Saturday afternoon, however, Pellitory's proven stamina could be a

Verdict

Ardisia and Pellitory are our two against the field for the 2026 Ayr Gold Cup.
