The 2026 Grand National at Aintree was an electrifying spectacle with I Am Maximus making a triumphant comeback to capture the title. Initially challenged by Iroko and Jordans among others, the race was anything but predictable. With early incidents causing disruptions among front-runners, I Am Maximus showcased impeccable timing and skill, reclaiming his crown with spectacular performance. Despite numerous falls, including high-profile contenders, all horses, such as Top Of The Bill, were reported safe post-race. The Grand National results for 2026 are in after another dramatic day at Aintree, with the world’s most famous horse race producing a thrilling finish on Saturday afternoon.
Dan Skelton all-but sealed the Champion Trainer title after a Grade One double on Saturday, and his prolific mare Panic Attack was backed into Grand National favouritism during the build-up.
Willie Mullins was represented again by 2024 winner I Am Maximus, and Paul Townend's mount moved back to the head of the market in the minutes before the off. Grangeclare West finished third behind his stablemate and another Closutton in-mate Nick Rockett 12 months ago, and he was the ride of last year's winning jockey, Patrick Mullins.
Jagwar was popular in the betting for local trainer Oliver Greenall and Josh Guerriero, who were also represented by last year's beaten favourite Iroko. Johnny, whogot the better of Jagwar in the Ultima last month, and sat prominently in the betting too. Oscars Brother was well-backed on the day, as was Monty's Star, Captain Cody and Gorgeous Tom.
Haiti Couleurs was the biggest drifter of the day, and was sent off at 28/1. Final Orders, Gerri Colombe, Stellar Story and Favori De Champdou were solid in the market. Champ Kiely, Perceval Legallois and Quai De Bourbon came in for support in the minutes before the off.

Fittingly, after what we saw at Cheltenham, there was a false start to the 2026 Grand National. When the starter finally sent them on their way, the early going was packed with drama.
The well-fancied Grangeclare West unseated his rider at the first. Quai De Bourbon fell at the second, hampering Panic Attack and Jordans. Then, at the third, Panic Attack fell to the ground, and it was Amirite who led the Grand National field into the first turn.
Gerri Colombe departed at the first ditch, hampering Jordans again. Mr Vango departed at Becher's Brook, but Top Of The Bill and Imperial Saint were going well and moved up to help Amirite make the running.
Haiti Couleurs was well back in the field early on, along with The Real Whacker. Jordans and Firefox also sat near the rear at the end of the first circuit.
A loose horse moved across the front of the field on the approach to The Chair for a second time and caused High Class Hero to make an error. Oscars Brother and Banbridge both fell in the ruckus, while I Am Maximus and Champ Kiely made errors along the inside.
At the final ditch, another fancied horse departed the race, as Jagwar bowed out. Stellar Story and Perceval Legallois fell soon afterwards, as Jordans made progress from the rear.
Lecky Watson was pulled up after struggling throughout, and Captain Cody had bowed out. Three Card Brag and Monty's Star had jumped well and latched onto the heels of the leaders after Foinavon.
Suddenly, Ben Jones took the race by the scruff of the neck, and Jordans sprinted into the lead. Joseph O'Brien's star held a clear lead on the approach to the second-last fence, but the chasing pack was hot on the leader's tail.
Eyes were drawn to Paul Townend aboard I Am Maximus, who was angled out at the perfect time to chase down the leader. The 2024 champion hit the front rounding the elbow, and Townend punched the air as I Am Maximus made history and won back his Grand National crown.
Iroko stormed home to finish second, ahead of the tiring Jordans. Johnnywho ran on strongly to finish fourth, ahead of High Class Hero, who was up with the pace throughout.
Of the fallen horses, Top Of The Bill was still being assessed by the vets when Willie Mullins was presented with the trophy. Half an hour after the race, we were told that Top Of The Bill was up on his feet and walked onto the horse ambulance. Jockey, Robbie Dunne took a heavy fall aboard Stellar Story. We'll update this article with further news, but all of the other fallen horses seem to have come out of the race unscathed.
