The 2026 King Charles III Stakes, a prestigious Group One sprint at Royal Ascot, features a full field of 26 with Overpass and Night Raider favored. Experts recommend looking beyond favorites and backing each-way longshots Cover Up (50/1) and Aspect Island (100/1). Both have strong sprinting form, favorable draws, and talented jockeys. The recommendation is to seek value with these outsiders in a race historically won from higher stalls. Expect fierce competition in this highly anticipated event.

2026 King Charles III Stakes Runners

With Joliestar heading for the feature on day five of Royal Ascot, Bjorn Baker's raider Overpass heads the market for Tuesday's big sprint. Despite running mainly over six and seven furlongs in his homeland, Overpass is no stranger to racing over the minimum trip, and makes his British debut on the back of a solid fourth at Group One level.

Karl Burke's Night Raider has taken his form to a new level this season, winning both the Palace House Stakes and the Temple Stakes. American Affair returns to defend his crown after a narrow defeat to Night Raider at Haydock. Rayevka will represent Francis Graffard following a Group Three victory at Longchamp.

Aidan O'Brien's Mission Central takes on his elders after back-to-back Listed wins at Naas. 2024 champion Asfoora will have to bounce back after a couple of disappointing runs this term, as will Sprint Cup winner Big Mojo, who was only seventh on his reappearance at York.

Getreadytorumble has been drawn in stall one. Mgheera, Frost At Dawn, Rumstar and Starlust have also landed low draws. Commonwealth Cup winner Time For Sandals will spring from stall nine under Richard Kingscote. Behike, Rosy Affair, Monteille and Jm Jungle will also emerge from more central stalls.

Jakajaro is the likely pace angle on the stands' side after being drawn in stall 23. Cover Up, Aspect Island, Heavenly Heather and Azure Angel will break from high gates. Miss Attitude, Shagraan, First Instinct and Ain't Nobody also feature in this large and competitive field.

2026 King Charles III Stakes Tips

I don't back anything at a short price in Group One sprints here in the UK. I might make an exception to that rule when I cover the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes later in the week, but I've got no desire at all to get stuck into the likes of Overpass or Night Raider at the top of this market.

Six of the last eight winners of this Group One were drawn in stall 10 or higher, and I've picked out two outsiders to back on the preferred side of the track, starting with COVER UP (50/1).

From his nine career wins, eight have come over the flat five furlongs. Cover Up took his sprinting game to a new level last season, winning a competitive handicap over this course-and-distance in July, before Listed and Group Two victories out in Meydan.

Simon and Ed Crisford upped Cover Up to six furlongs for his final two starts of the Meydan World Cup Carnival. Their six-year-old did okay when third behind Native Approach in the Nad Al Sheba Turf Sprint, but struggled to get into the race when eighth on his final outing in the Al Quoz Sprint.

The Crisfords have managed to snap up James McDonald to take the ride on Tuesday. The New Zealander has ridden five winners at Royal Ascot, including when guiding Nature Strip to victory in this very race in 2023. Faster ground will suit Cover Up too. He's well worth a punt at 66/1.

Another outsider to consider is ASPECT ISLAND (100/1). It's taken a while for James Owen to realise that this talented colt is a five-furlong sprinter, which is strange when you realise that he's a full-brother to the multiple Group One-placed sprinter and top sire Tasleet.

Aspect Island started his career over seven furlongs, and won a six-furlong handicap off 76 last season. Owen's colt ended his juvenile campaign with a solid third in the Cornwallis Stakes, before repeating that placing behind the excellent Cy Fair in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint.

On his return in the six-furlong Abernant Stakes, Aspect Island started quickly but couldn't sustain his challenge. Oisin Murphy's mount was backed into favouritism on his return to five furlongs in the Westow Stakes, but a low draw saw the favourite run a solo effort for much of the contest, before eventually finishing a half-length third behind Dickensian.

Owen has added a visor for Aspect Island's second start at Group One level, and the excellent Silvestre De Sousa jumps into his saddle. Being a three-year-old, Aspect Island will be getting a handy chunk of weight from the older sprinters, and we're yet to see the best of this well-bred colt over the minimum distance.
