New Zealand vs Fiji Verdict

New Zealand and Fiji can serve up an entertaining Rugby League World Cup with over 58.5 points when they meet on Saturday. Expect big performances from both Ronaldo Mulitalo and Jamayne Isaako.

New Zealand vs Fiji Head To Head

Fiji registered their only ever win over a Tier 1 nation when they beat New Zealand in a tryless clash back in 2017 and also pushed the Kiwis four years ago.

New Zealand Form

New Zealand went down in a tight 24-22 defeat to Australia in their World Cup opener before surviving an early scare against the Cook Islands last week.

The Kiwis appeared in control until the Cook Islands scored three quick-fire tries to lead 16-12 midway through the first half.

However, those tries came through somewhat fortuitous intercepts and kicks - NZ managed to turn things around fairly quickly and won the 2nd half 46-0 to complete a 82-16 victory, with Isaako scoring a hat-trick and Mulitalo and Casey McLean crossing for doubles.

Fiji Form

After easing past Cook Islands 40-12 in their opening game, Fiji almost pulled off the greatest upset in international Rugby League history.

The Bati led Australia 16-12 early in the second half and Fijians dared to dream, with Semi Valemei scoring a hat-trick of tries out wide.

However, the Kangaroos knuckled down and scored four of the next five tries to close out a 36-22 victory.

Team News

The Kiwis welcome back centre Dane Gagai and prop Moses Leota after the pair were rested last week, prompting several changes to the starting lineup.

Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad shifts to the interchange bench, while Joseph Tapine moves to lock. Isaiah Papali'i also returns to the starting side, joining Briton Nikora in the back row.

The reshuffle sees Xavier Willison, Erin Clark and Scott Sorensen move to the interchange, while promising debutant Tanner Stowers-Smith drops back to the reserves alongside Leo Thompson and Jacob Laban.

Fiji have made several changes to their lineup, with Sunia Turuva shifting to fullback and Ronald Philitoga earning a spot on the wing following an injury to Bayley Bentleigh-Hape.

Warriors prop Emosi Ravosai has been promoted to the starting side, replacing Mitchell Prest, who will serve a one-match suspension after a high tackle on Lindsay Smith last week.

Meanwhile, Eels forward Jordan Miller and Storm winger Joseph Litidamu are the two new additions to Fiji's six-man interchange bench.

Verdict

Over 58.5 total points & Fiji scoring 12+ points are the main plays, with Ronaldo & Isaako also backed for doubles.
