2026 GWS Giants vs Carlton Blues Preview
Carlton’s remarkable run is set to hit a Giants roadblock in AFL Round 15.
The Blues have won four matches in a row since parting ways with Michael Voss as their coach and come up against a GWS side that have been inconsistent this season.
But we can expect the Giants to rebound after their loss to St Kilda last weekend. Despite going down by eight points, there was plenty to like from their performance and they remain one of the more dangerous sides in the competition when they get their game up and running.
The Giants remain one of the competition's best possession sides, ranking second in the AFL for disposals, while Clayton Oliver, Lachie Whitfield, Lachie Ash and Finn Callaghan give them enormous drive through the midfield and across half-back. Their ability to control possession and generate repeat forward entries can place significant pressure on Carlton’s defence.
The Blues deserve enormous credit for their recent resurgence and have rediscovered their pressure, contest work and ability to grind out results. However, the Blues still have work to do with their ball movement and inside-50 connection. Those are areas that GWS are well equipped to exploit if they can gain ascendancy through the midfield and control territory.
The Giants appear well placed to test those areas on their home deck in the
Round 15 clash. Their midfield depth matches up favourably against Carlton's on-ball brigade and they possess more avenues to goal.
Carlton's leaders, headed by Patrick Cripps, Sam Walsh and George Hewett, will ensure the contest remains tight. The Blues have become a far tougher side to play against over the past month and should again be highly competitive.
But with the Giants returning home, welcoming back key personnel and producing several encouraging signs despite last week's defeat, they look capable of ending Carlton's winning streak and strengthening their position inside the top 10. The total points market is another to consider here with the ‘under’ well and truly in play.
GWS have won three of four at ENGIE Stadium this season.
- The Giants were 78-point winners against Brisbane in their most recent outing at the venue
- The total points in Carlton’s four matches under Josh Fraser has averaged just 149.
- Patrick Cripps has averaged 34 disposals in his past five matches against GWS
- Clayton Oliver has has 35+ disposals in three of his past four matches
Head to Head
GWS have won the past two matches between the two sides, with those coming in 2025, resulting in a 28-point win at Marvel Stadium and a 12-point win at ENGIE Stadium.
Standout player performances in the recent head-to-heads have come from;
- Lachie Whitfield (Giants) - 25+ disposals in each of his past five matches against the Blues
- Patrick Cripps (Blues) - Has averaged 34 disposals in his past five matches against GWS
- Jesse Hogan (Giants) - 12 goals in his past three matches against the Blues
- Will Hayward (Blues) - As a Swan, he kicked 12 goals from his past five matches against the Giants
GWS are struggling for consistency in 2026. They gave the impression they were back to their best with a dazzling 78-point win over Brisbane as well as a 49-point triumph over Melbourne, but returned from the bye with an eight-point loss to St Kilda.
That loss leaves them with a win-loss record of 6-7 and some work to do to hold their spot in the top eight. The Giants generated more inside 50s than the Saints and won the stoppage battle but their ability to create opportunities wasn't reflected on the scoreboard.
Jesse Hogan battled in his return from injury, while Aaron Cadman, Jake Stringer and Toby Greene combine for nine goals. Clayton Oliver, Lachie Ash, Lachie Whitfield and Brent Daniels all had over 30 disposals.
Oliver is averaging 34 disposals in his past four matches, while Ash is averaging 32 in the same period. The Giants rank second in the competition for disposals this season, with Finn Callaghan another capable of posting big numbers.
GWS Giants Team News
The Giants could welcome back a trio of important players, with Jesse Hogan, Ryan Angwin and Cody Angove all listed as tests and expected to be available if they get through training. The bye also provided several injured players with an extra week to recover, while Stephen Coniglio has resumed running as he works his way back from a low-grade hamstring strain and remains 2-3 weeks away.
The injury list is still significant, however, with Tom Green ruled out for the season, while Jack Buckley, Darcy Jones, Nick Madden and Xavier O'Halloran remain sidelined for another month or more. Jake Riccardi is 7-8 weeks away, while Josh Kelly, Logan Smith and Nathan Wardius do not yet have a timeline for their return.
It has been a stunning turnaround by Carlton since the club parted ways with Michael Voss. The Blues have won four straight matches under caretaker coach Josh Fraser, with those victories coming against the Western Bulldogs, Port Adelaide, Geelong and Essendon.
They have rediscovered their pressure, contest work and ability to sustain intensity across four quarters. After struggling badly with momentum swings and second-half fadeouts earlier in the season, Carlton are far more connected, with their reset built around pressure, territory and transition.
Carlton's leaders have driven the turnaround, led by Patrick Cripps, who has returned to dominant form through the midfield. The two-time Brownlow Medallist has had 30+ disposals in three of his past five matches and 29 in another. Sam Walsh has had 25+ disposals in four of his past five, while Jagga Smith has reached that mark in four of his past five.
Harry McKay was pivotal in the five-point win over Essendon with three goals, while Brodie Kemp booted two. Kemp has kicked two goals in each of his past three matches and has 16 from his past eight.
Carlton Blues Team News
Carlton's injury list is starting to ease at the right time, with Jacob Weitering, Ollie Hollands, Liam Reidy and Lucas Camporeale all expected to be available after the bye and in the mix for the Blues' next match.
While there are some long-term concerns with Matt Carroll, Rob Monahan and Jesse Motlop all sidelined for the season, the return of key players should give Carlton a significant boost heading into the second half of the year. Harry O'Farrell remains the main unknown, with his recovery timeline yet to be determined.
