Western Bulldogs vs Sydney Swans Preview

The Sydney Swans will take advantage of a wounded Western Bulldogs outfit when the two sides clash in Thursday night football at Marvel Stadium.

The Dogs have been hit hard in recent weeks with Sam Darcy and Tim English among some big names on the sidelines, dropping their last two to sit 4-2 after Round 6.

The Swans come off a 41-point win over their cross-town rivals, GWS, and sit on top of the ladder with a 5-1 win-loss record.

The Round 7 opener as another tough night for Luke Beveridge’s side. Injuries aside, they need to avoid the turnovers that have been on display in recent weeks as that will play into Sydney’s hands, given they are one of the best transition sides in the competition.

At the contest, the absence or limited fitness of Tim English looms large. The Bulldogs have been smashed at the coalface without English and Sydney’s ability to win first possession and surge the ball forward gives their forwards repeat looks.

Given Sydney’s ability to absorb pressure, respond to momentum swings, and maintain structure across four quarters, the task at hand looks too great.

Take the Swans to cover the line, while Charlie Curnow can continue his good record against the Bulldogs. Brodie Grundy looks set for another big match, particularly if Tim English fails to prove his fitness in time.

  • Sydney’s five wins this season have been by 32 points or more.
  • The Bulldogs have averaged just 60 points in their last two outings.
  • Charlie Curnow has kicked 20 goals in his past five matches against the Bulldogs.
  • Brodie Grundy is averaging 25 disposals in the past three rounds.

Western Bulldogs Form Analysis

The Bulldogs flew out of the blocks in 2026 with four wins to open the season, including a couple of tough road trips, but injuries have taken a massive toll at the kennel since then.

Without their ruckman, Tim English, they were monstered at the stoppages when going down to Hawthorn in Gather Round by 40 points, losing the hitouts 17-64 and stoppage clearances 16-34.

The battles in the ruck were further compounded with the injury to their star forward, Sam Darcy, in the 75-point loss to Geelong, where they registered just 8.8 (56), their lowest score since Round 18, 2024.

Ed Richards (30 disposals) and Bailey Dale (29) found their share of the ball against the Cats, while Aaron Naughton booted three goals. Naughton will be a key focal point and has kicked 18 goals from his six matches this season.

Western Bulldogs Team News

Plenty to digest for Bulldogs fans with Sam Darcy’s season-ending ACL injury, while Tom Liberatore suffered another concussion. Key defensive pair Rory Lobb and James O’Donnell both suffered hamstring injuries in the loss to Geelong. English is edging closer to a return, while Adam Treloar may be available to make his long-awaited comeback. Jedd Busslinger and Ryan Gardner are among the possible defensive replacements. There will be increased responsibility on the younger brigade, with players like Jordan Croft and Will Lewis likely to step into bigger roles.

Sydney Swans Form Analysis

Sydney sit on top of the ladder with a 5-1 win-loss record after their 41-point win over Greater Western Sydney. They have registered some big winning margins so far and sit with a healthy percentage of 173.3, averaging just under 115 points per game.

The win was set up by the run off half-back from Nick Blakey, who picked up 34 disposals and a goal, while Justin McInerney (26 disposals and two goals) and Isaac Heeney (28 disposals) continued their good form.

Justin McInerney has averaged 26 disposals this season, the highest of any Swan, while Heeney has hit the 25+ in his past three, kicking six goals in that period.

Brodie Grundy continues to produce in the ruck and had 37 hitouts and 27 disposals against the Giants. He will be influential, particularly if English does not come up for the Bulldogs, while Charlie Curnow continues to adapt to his new side, growing in confidence after kicking three goals last week.

Sydney Swans Team News

No injuries for Sydney to come out of the Giants match and they are unlikely to make too many changes. Haydn McLean and Caiden Cleary were among the better players in the Swans VFL win over the Giants.
