2026 Sandy Lane Stakes Runners
Venetian Sun claimed a hat-trick of impressive wins over six furlongs as a juvenile last season, and Karl Burke will drop his Group One winner back to sprinting after she failed to see out a mile in the 1000 Guineas. Clive Cox's Coppull sits third in the betting, having returned to action with a Group Three victory in the Commonwealth Cup trial at Ascot.
Division was very slowly away at Ascot, but was only beaten half a length by Coppull in the Pavillion Stakes. Aidan O'Brien's Brussels finished a disappointing sixth that day, but returns to action at Haydock with Sean Levey in the saddle.
Kevin Stott and Kevin Ryan team up with Rock On Thunder, who was only beaten a length in last season's Gimcrack Stakes. Five Ways returns to his own age group, following a decent sixth behind Night Raider in the five-furlong Palace House Stakes.
Like Venetian Sun, Spicy Marg drops back down in trip having finished eighth in the 1000 Guineas. Roger Varian's Aqpam, well beaten in the Carnarvon Stakes last weekend, completes the line-up.
2026 Sandy Lane Stakes Tips
I do think there's every chance we could see VENETIAN SUN (11/4) bounce back to top form this weekend. Karl Burke has won this race on a couple of occasions, and his star filly was unbeaten over six furlongs as a two-year-old.
Venetian Sun won the Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot and the Duchess Of Cambridge at the July Festival. Clifford Lee's mount then saw off Gstaad and Wise Approach to land the Prix Morny at Deauville, thus opening her account at Group One level.
I didn't fancy Venetian Sun's chances of seeing out a mile in the 1000 Guineas, having watched Burke's filly run out of steam when third to Precise on her final two-year-old start in the Moyglare. An awful draw in stall one made things even more difficult for Venetian Sun, and Burke's filly looked a little flat and undercooked as she crossed the line a well-beaten 11th.
Burke was always going to drop his budding stable star back down to six furlongs after that defeat, and Venetian Sun has landed a kind low draw in stall three this weekend. Having claimed her Group One win on French soil, soft Haydock ground shouldn't phase the market leader, and I'd be disappointed if she couldn't get the better of what seems to be a fairly modest field.
