One of the biggest betting races to take place over Christmas is the Welsh Grand National. This three-and-three-quarter-mile handicap chase was first run at Chepstow racecourse back in 1895. The Welsh National has been won by several Gold Cup heroes down the years too, including greats like Burrough Hill Lad, Master Oats, Synchronised and Native River.

Here's our free guide to the 2025 Welsh Grand National, including the latest odds, key trends and best betting tips.

2025 Welsh Grand National Tip 1 - O'Connell

Jubilee Express is six pounds well-in at the weights after his victory in the Welsh National Trial. On the same day at Sandown, O'CONNELL (9/1) ran out an impressive winner of the London National at Sandown, and could have a huge hand to play in the Christmas highlight at Chepstow.

Joel Parkinson and Sue Smith's nine-year-old bolted up in the Lincolnshire National on Boxing Day last year, before following up in the Masters Handicap at Sandown. O'Connell was then held up in the Eidar Chase at Newcastle, but moved up into a position to challenge approaching the second-last, only to get outpaced late on by the bottom-weight Knockanore.

After an eye-catching third on his reappearance at Carlisle, Gavin Sheehan's mount defeated Hung Jury to land his second big handicap around Sandown. Danny McMenamin, who rode Grand Geste to victory in the Tommy Whittle on Saturday, jumps into O'Connell's saddle for the first time, and he'll have to fancy his chances on this excellent stayer.

2025 Welsh Grand National Tip 2 - Tanganyika

Unusually, it looks like this year's Welsh Grand National will be run on decent ground. Such conditions should suit TANGANYIKA (33/1), who should improve for his pulled-up effort behind O'Connell at Sandown.

Venetia Williams' seven-year-old enjoyed a productive winter on good ground last term. Charlie Deutsch's stayer beat good rivals at Market Rasen and Carlisle, before losing out by just a length to Mr Vango in the Midlands Grand National.

Tanganyika slipped way down the market after he failed to finish in the London National, but ran well on his reappearance at Cheltenham and enters this contest running off a winnable mark. Venetia Williams is superb at targeting these staying handicaps, and Tanganyika certainly seems overpriced.
