Gold Coast Suns vs West Coast Eagles Preview

Gold Coast will run riot with a big win over West Coast in the final match of AFL Round 1.

The gap between the two sides appears pretty significant heading into this clash, particularly given Gold Coast’s growing midfield strength and the Eagles’ ongoing struggles.

With the Suns aiming to consolidate their position as a genuine finals contender and the Eagles continuing to develop a young list, this matchup could quickly become one-sided if Gold Coast establish control early.

The Suns’ midfield will dictate the contest from the outset. Noah Anderson and Touk Miller have consistently dominated the Eagles in recent meetings and have been joined this season by the 2021 Norm Smith Medallist, Christian Petracca.

The former Demon was on fire in his Suns debut last weekend, with 33 disposals and three goals in the 59-point win over Geelong.

The Suns ability to win contested ball and drive clearance numbers is likely to generate heavy inside-50 supply. Ben King continues to thrive as the focal point in attack and has regularly produced big scoring games against West Coast.

The Eagles challenge will be trying to limit that midfield dominance and slow the Suns’ transition game. They showed glimpses of competitiveness during the pre-season but were still vulnerable when opposition sides generated repeat entries and sustained pressure.

Expect the Suns to produce a comfortable victory with Anderson and Ben King posting big numbers.

  • Gold Coast claimed the Round 1 fixture last season by 87 points
  • Noah Anderson has had 30+ disposals in his past three matches against the Eagles
  • Ben King has kicked 3+ goals in each of his past five matches against West Coast
  • The Eagles have lost five of their past six matches by 49 points or more

Head to Head

Gold Coast won the corresponding Round 1 match last season by 87 points with that match player over in the west. Noah Anderson picked up 36 disposals, while Matt Rowell had 30. Ben King booted six goals with Ben Long chiming in with four.

The Suns have won the past four between the two sides at People First Stadium.

Gold Coast Suns Form Analysis

Gold Coast opened the season with an impressive win over Geelong at GMHBA Stadium, defeating the Cats by 59 points in one of the more eye-catching performances of Round 1. The Suns controlled the midfield battle for long periods, led by a 34-disposal match from Christian Petracca, while Ben King was again a dominant presence inside 50 with four goals. Jarrod Witts provided strong ruck support with 52 hitouts, giving Gold Coast first use around stoppages

Gold Coast’s pressure and midfield drive proved decisive as the Suns generated 71 inside-50 entries. The Suns were particularly effective in the second half, using their speed through the middle to create repeat scoring opportunities and gradually pull away from the Cats.

The result reinforced the trajectory Gold Coast built last season. The Suns produced a historic 2025 campaign with 15 wins and their first finals appearance.

Gold Coast Suns Team News

Gold Coast are in healthy shape and have no fresh injuries out of their opening round encounter. Matt Rowell is still a couple of weeks away. Jed Walter is available to return from suspension.

West Coast Eagles Form Analysis

West Coast endured another extremely difficult season in 2025, finishing last on the ladder with just one win.

Their Community Series clash against Port Adelaide highlighted both promise and the scale of their rebuild. The Eagles competed strongly early but were eventually overpowered as the Power generated repeat inside-50 entries, going down by 73 points.

Their rebuild remains centred around youth development as several younger midfielders continue to gain valuable experience.

West Coast Eagles Team News

West Coast continue to prioritise development across their younger list.

Several emerging players are expected to receive extended opportunities as the Eagles continue to rebuild toward their next competitive window. Liam Baker will be missed and is serving a suspension. Jack Graham, Liam Duggan, Tim Kelly and Reuben Gibney are recovering from various injuries and will be out to prove their fitness. Off-season recruits, Harry Schoenberg and Brandon Starcevich are a couple of weeks away.
