GWS Giants vs Geelong Cats Preview
GWS are set to hand Geelong another interstate defeat when the two sides line up in what shapes as a high-scoring shootout at ENGIE Stadium on Saturday.
The Giants arrive full of confidence after one of the biggest wins of the season, while Geelong continue to find themselves in tight contests despite an inconsistent month. Expect another close encounter, with GWS well placed to prevail in the 1-39 points bracket.
GWS have been up and down like a yo-yo this season but remain one of the competition's most dangerous transition teams, particularly when they win the clearance battle.
Geelong continue to back their experienced midfield to generate repeat inside 50s and give their dangerous forwards plenty of opportunities. With both sides preferring to move the ball quickly through the corridor, this has all the ingredients of a match that exceeds the total points line.
The midfield battle could ultimately determine the result. GWS rank second in the AFL for disposals this season and possess enormous depth around stoppages through Finn Callaghan, Clayton Oliver and Tom Green. Their ability to win first possession before spreading into open space has underpinned their biggest performances, and if they can once again gain ascendancy at the source, Geelong's defence will come under sustained pressure throughout the afternoon.
Inside forward 50, both teams possess genuine match-winners. Jake Stringer rediscovered his best football last weekend and shapes as a nightmare matchup given his ability to impact both in the air and at ground level. Geelong, meanwhile, still have Shannon Neale, Patrick Dangerfield and Jeremy Cameron capable of turning a match despite Cameron's recent quiet patch. With quality key forwards at both ends, goals should come regularly if midfield supply is strong.
The Cats' biggest concern remains their interstate form. Outside of Gather Round against West Coast, they have travelled four times this season and returned home without a victory. ENGIE Stadium has also proven a difficult venue for visiting sides, particularly when the Giants are able to control territory and generate repeat forward entries through their relentless pressure around the contest.
Recent history also favours the home side in the
Round 18 clash. GWS have won the past four meetings between the clubs and enter this clash with renewed confidence after proving they can match it with the AFL's best. Take the Giants in a minor upset with Stringer to back up his form from last week, while Shannon Neale shapes as a dangeours target inside forward 50 for the Cats.
GWS have won the past four matches between the two sides.
- In GWS' five matches at ENGIE Stadium this season, the total points has averaged 194.
- In Geelong's matches in 2026, the total points has averaged over 180.
- Shannon Neale kicked five goals the last time the two sides met.
- Jake Stringer kicked seven goals last weekend.
Head to Head
GWS have won the past four between the two sides. Three of those were at Geelong's home ground and decided by less than 10 points, while the most recent encounter was at ENGIE Stadium last season, going the way of the Giants by 26 points.
Standout player performances in the recent head to heads have come from;
- Jake Stringer (Giants) – eight goals in his past three outings against Geelong
- Shannon Neale (Cats) – five goals the last time he played the Giants
- Clayton Oliver (Giants) – as a Demon he recorded 30+ disposals in five of his past six against the Cats
- Max Holmes (Cats) – 30+ disposals in two of his past three against the Giants
GWS sit in 14th position on the ladder with a 7-9 record, but their season has been one of extremes. The Giants have mixed impressive victories over premiership contenders with disappointing losses, although they snapped a three-match losing streak in emphatic fashion last weekend by becoming just the second team to defeat Fremantle this season, winning by 21 points.
The Giants rank second in the AFL for disposals this season, highlighting their ability to control possession when their midfield gets on top. That strength was on full display against the Dockers as they dominated the clearance battle and consistently won territory through the middle of the ground.
Jake Stringer produced one of the performances of the season with a career-high seven goals, while Clayton Oliver collected 32 disposals and Finn Callaghan added 30. Callaghan has now recorded 30+ disposals in five of his past six matches, while Oliver has reached 30+ in five of his past seven, recording 28 and 29 in the other two. Toby Greene also continued his outstanding form with three goals and has now booted 18 majors across his past six matches.
GWS Giants Team News
Lachie Whitfield is expected to miss after entering concussion protocols following last week's victory over Fremantle. His absence is a significant blow given his importance to the Giants' ball movement and rebound from defence.
The Giants remain one of the most injury-hit clubs in the competition, although there is optimism some depth players are edging closer to returning through the VFL. Jesse Hogan, Brent Daniels and Jack Buckley are still not expected to be available this week.
Geelong have lost four of their past five matches and went down to Brisbane by 22 points at GMHBA Stadium last Thursday. They conceded the first eight goals of the match before recovering from a 43-point deficit to briefly close within a point, but Brisbane's run and carry ultimately proved decisive.
The Cats won the inside 50 count and registered more scoring shots in the 14.17 (101) to 19.9 (123) scoreline, but costly turnovers in the back half and poor conversion in front of goal proved costly.
Patrick Dangerfield booted five goals, while Max Holmes and Bailey Smith both had 30+ disposals. Holmes has now recorded 30+ disposals in three of his past four matches, while Smith has achieved the feat in six of his past seven. Jeremy Cameron remains one to watch after going goalless last weekend, with the star forward managing just five goals across his past four matches.
Excluding the Gather Round match against West Coast, Geelong have ventured interstate on four occasions this season for four losses.
Geelong Cats Team News
The Cats escaped last week's loss without any fresh injuries. Max Holmes experienced some hamstring awareness during the match but played out the game strongly, with the club confident there are no concerns over a significant injury.
Jeremy Cameron continues to work through a rare form slump after managing just four disposals against Brisbane, although Geelong remain confident the star forward is fully fit and capable of rediscovering his best quickly. Overall, the Cats remain in excellent shape from an injury perspective with very few players unavailable.
