The Western Bulldogs look to cement their top-eight status in AFL Round 18 with a must-win clash against the West Coast Eagles. Historically dominant at Marvel Stadium, the Bulldogs are tipped for a significant victory, boasting recent large-margin wins over the Eagles. Despite an inconsistent season, they’ve excelled against lower-ranked opponents. West Coast, hampered by form and a poor record at Marvel, field an unchanged young lineup. Recommended tips include backing the Bulldogs at -36.5, over 175.5 match points, and Marcus Bontempelli for 2+ goals.

Western Bulldogs vs West Coast Eagles Verdict

The Western Bulldogs need wins still, sitting in eighth spot on the ladder heading into Round 18. They can get a big four points and boost their percentage with a comprehensive win over the West Coast Eagles.

  • The Bulldogs have won the past two at Marvel Stadium against the Eagles by 94 and 76 points.
  • Marcus Bontempelli has kicked five goals in his past two matches against West Coast.
  • Seven of the past 10 matches at Marvel Stadium have gone over 183 points.
  • The Eagles have lost their past 11 matches at Marvel Stadium by an average margin of 63 points, with eight of those defeats by 50 points or more. Their lowest losing margin during that stretch was 29 points.

Head to Head Stats

The Bulldogs have won the past two between the two sides by 94 points and 76 points, with both of those matches played at Marvel Stadium. However, the Eagles recorded a seven-point upset in 2023.

The Bulldogs have won seven of the past eight meetings in total, with their past four victories over West Coast all coming by margins of 55 points or more.

Western Bulldogs Form - 2 Defeats In 3

The Bulldogs have endured an up-and-down campaign and head into Round 18 having lost two of their past three matches.

They were beaten by 35 points at the SCG last weekend after defeating St Kilda by 22 points at Marvel Stadium the week before, and now return to a venue where they hold a solid 5-4 record in 2026.

Their fixture has been among the toughest in the AFL. Remarkably, the Bulldogs have played just four matches against sides currently outside the top 10, winning all four, making this one of the rare occasions they face a lower-ranked opponent.

Last season they regularly piled on big margins against teams below them, and this shapes as another opportunity to rediscover that ruthless streak.

The Bulldogs were unable to consistently connect inside 50 against Sydney despite winning first possession at stoppages.

They finished only three ahead in clearances despite dominating first possessions and generated 20 fewer inside 50s, while their ball use entering attack was well below their usual standard. Those issues are far less likely to be exposed against a younger West Coast outfit.

Bailey Dale again led the way with a game-high 32 disposals and has now produced 30 or more in five of his past seven matches. Ed Richards continued his outstanding season with 29 disposals and has now recorded 25 or more in three of his past four outings.

Western Bulldogs Team News

Luke Beveridge has responded to last week's defeat with a host of changes. Despite speculation surrounding Tim English, the star ruckman has been named, while the Bulldogs regain several experienced players on an extended bench.

Nick Coffield, Connor Budarick and Ryley Sanders are all unavailable through injury, while Will Lewis and Lachie McNeil have been omitted.

West Coast Eagles Form - 4 Straight Losses

West Coast enter Round 18 with a 4-12 record and have now lost four consecutive matches. After narrow defeats to Port Adelaide and North Melbourne, they were comfortably beaten by Carlton before producing a more competitive performance in a 25-point loss to Adelaide last weekend.

The Eagles again paid the price for a slow start, conceding the opening four goals before fighting back admirably throughout the remainder of the contest. Their inability to consistently compete early has become a recurring theme in 2026 and is a dangerous habit against quality opposition.

Harley Reid led the side with 23 disposals and six clearances, while Jake Waterman and Jobe Shanahan each kicked three goals. Bailey Williams improved after a difficult opening quarter in the ruck, while young midfielder Oliver Francou impressed on debut with 18 disposals and nine tackles.

Although the Eagles have shown encouraging signs through their emerging talent, their record away from home remains a significant concern and Marvel Stadium has been an especially difficult venue, where they have lost 11 straight matches.

West Coast Eagles Team News

The Eagles head east with an unchanged starting 22, although Ryan Maric, Harry Johnston and Sandy Brock have been added to the extended interchange. Andrew McQualter will be hoping continuity helps his young side build on recent performances.

Verdict

Bulldogs are backed to cover with the total match points to hit the over. The Bont should get plenty of disposals and scoreboard influence.
