2025 December Gold Cup Runners
Cheltenham Festival winner, Jagwar missed his intended reappearance in the Paddy Power Gold Cup when the ground turned testing. Oliver Greenall & Josh Guerriero will be hoping that the ground at Cheltenham eases a bit before the weekend, as their progressive six-year-old heads the betting for Saturday's feature at Cheltenham.
In Jagwar's absence, Panic Attack ran out an impressive winner of the Paddy Power. Sam Thomas' Vincenzo finished second ahead of the winner's stablemate, Hoe Joly Smoke, and both will head to Cheltenham on Saturday again.
Joseph O'Brien will throw new recruit Kim Roque into this handicap, having finished second to Kdeaux Saint Fray on his stable debut here at Cheltenham in November. Grand Sefton winner, Colonel Harry will represent Jamie Snowden. Imperial Saint drops back down in class after a tame fifth-place on his return in the Old Roan.
Cheltenham handicap regular, Il Ridoto has been entered again by Paul Nicholls. Other runners include Alan King's ten-year-old Es Perfecto, Martator for Charlie Deutsch and Venetia Williams, multiple Cheltenham winner Ga Law, and Faye Bramley's nine-year-old Glengouly.
2025 December Gold Cup Tips
Jagwar remains capable of going onto bigger and better things, and the favourite is perfectly capable of winning off this mark. Vincenzo ran a mighty race when second to Panic Attack in the Paddy Power Gold Cup, and Sam Thomas' seven-year-old is fully entitled to build on that reappearance.
Despite only 11 runners featuring in the final field, some firms are paying out on the first four places. With that in mind, I've talked myself into a punt on MARTATOR (16/1) for last year's winning connections.
Venetia Williams' star won twice over two miles at Ascot at the start of last season, rising to a career-high mark of 151. Martator struggled during the second half of the season, and was beaten 66-lengths on his reappearance in the Haldon Gold Cup.
Williams' charge drifted out to 11/1 before his most recent run at Ascot, and looked in danger of dropping out the back of the TV turning for home. Yet, Martator found a second wind down the home straight, and an excellent jump at the last saw Ned Fox's mount finish a close second behind Calico.
Martator remains on a winnable mark of 141 and last year's winning jockey, Charlie Deutsch returns to the saddle. Williams' eight-year-old saw out two-and-a-half miles well on heavy ground at Newbury earlier in his career, before dropping back to the minimum trip, and the time seems right to give Martator another go over this extended distance.
