Day 1 of the 2026 Ebor Festival at York kicks off with seven high-class races, including prestigious Group contests like the Juddmonte International Stakes, Great Voltigeur Stakes, and Acomb Stakes. Handicaps round out a competitive card, where expert tips highlight runners such as Air Force One (1:50pm), Alfred Wallace (2:25pm), Galiyan (3:00pm), and Kirchner (4:10pm). Notably, Air Force One and Candy are strong value plays for the opener, while Alfred Wallace and Kirchner also come with convincing recent form. A thrilling opener to Britain’s premier flat racing festival.
One of Britain's most popular horse racing festivals begins on Wednesday, as the 2026 Ebor Festival gets underway at York racecourse.
Wednesday's card is headlined by a stunning renewal of the Juddmonte International Stakes. St Leger hopefuls will clash in the Great Voltigeur Stakes, after a field of promising juveniles does battle in the historic Acomb Stakes.

1:50pm York - Hong Kong Jockey Club World Pool Handicap Tips
Eight of the last ten winners of this card-opening sprint handicap have been drawn in stall 10 or lower, and I want to back two contenders on the low side of the draw. AIR FORCE ONE (15/2) was caught in traffic at a crucial stage last year, but was catching Trefor and The Man with every stride as he hit the line strongly back in third.
Geoff Oldroyd's five-year-old has been in good form since that narrow defeat. Air Force One went down by a neck at York again last September, won nicely at Beverley on his reappearance, and has been beaten by a length or less on each of his last three starts. PJ McDonald's mount is rated seven pounds higher than 12 months ago, but still only carries 8-13 and Air Force One has landed a favourable draw in stall five.
Then there's CANDY (33/1), who has finished last on his two most recent starts. Richard Spencer's gelding did, however, have excuses for those defeats. Candy banged his head coming out of the stalls when tailed off in the Wokingham, and Jack Callan's saddle slipped at the halfway point in the Shaker Handicap at Glorious Goodwood.
George Wood was in the saddle when Candy bolted up in the Ayr Silver Cup last season. The Ayr Gold Cup will have been at the forefront of Spencer's thoughts ever since that demolition job last September, but he'll want Candy to show a glimmer of form before heading back up to Scotland next month, and Wood's mount is certainly classy enough to challenge in this sort of contest.
2:25pm York - Acomb Stakes Tips
There hasn't been a winning favourite in the Acomb Stakes since 2015, but Haffner should go very close after his effort behind Dr Rascal at Goodwood. That said, I was mightily impressed with ALFRED WALLACE (6/1) as he struck late to land the Pat Eddery Stakes at Ascot last time out, and would rather back Ed Walker's colt at 6/1 than Aidan O'Brien's market leader.
Alfred Wallace couldn't find any racing room when finishing down the field in the Windsor Castle Stakes, and didn't appreciate front-running tactics in the Superlative Stakes. Despite those defeats, Kieran Shoemark's mount was backed into favouritism for the Pat Eddery, and stormed home from off the pace to collar Silver Dominion on the run to the line.
Walker's colt is bred to be good - by Dubawi and out of the Group One-winning miler Snow Lantern. Alfred Wallace has already won twice over seven furlongs this season, and seems capable of another step in the right direction.

3:00pm York - Great Voltigeur Stakes Tips
Five leading St Leger hopefuls will now meet before the final Classic of the season at Doncaster next month. Christmas Day beat Maltese Cross and Pierre Bonnard in the Epsom Derby. Aidan O'Brien's star then finished second to Benvenuto Cellini in the Irish equivalent the following month - with Pierre Bonnard back in third - before Maltese Cross opened his Group One account in the Grand Prix de Paris at Longchamp in July.
Superior Choice is an interesting contender for the Gosdens, and this son of Loving Dream looks ready to test his mettle at pattern level. GALIYAN (11/1) is the least fancied of the St Leger entrants, despite running well at both Royal Ascot and the July Festival.
Andrew Balding's star could only finish sixth as the favourite for the Queen's Vase, but was still only beaten three lengths, despite looking very green throughout the contest. Galiyan then put in a much more mature performance in the Bahrain Trophy at Newmarket, staying on well to finish a close second behind impressive winner Point Of Law.
Galiyan has taken a step forward with each of his four starts this term, and proved at Newmarket that he was capable of challenging at this level. Stepping back down in trip might not be ideal for this very strong stayer, but odds of 11/1 seem pretty wild considering the promise he's shown this term.
KIRCHNER (9/2) looked to have loads left up his sleeve when scoring at Ascot recently, and the booking of Ryan Moore shows that James Owen and his team mean business.
Owen's recruit finished down the field on his first couple of starts for the stable, both coming over 12 furlongs. Kirchner ran a blinder when second to Align The Stars on his two-mile debut in the Northumberland Plate, before thrashing a couple of decent rivals to claim his first victory for the stable at Ascot.
Despite a surprising drift in the betting, Kirchner was well on top as he crossed the line at Ascot, and looked every inch a Group-class stayer in the making. I'd be extremely surprised if this fresh mark of 97 proved to be his ceiling, and Kirchner seemed to relish fast ground conditions when registering that career-best performance.

4:45pm York - Irish Thoroughbred Marketing Handicap Tips
A second sprint handicap has been added to the day one festivities, but this one is reserved solely for three-year-olds. Plenty of pace seems to have been drawn on the high side of the track here, and TRICKY TEL (18/1) could be well placed to challenge from the widest stall of all.
Hugo Palmer's sprinter has done most of his winning at Chester, but did score at Hamilton earlier in the season, proving he wasn't solely reliant on the Roodee to produce his best form. Tricky Tel never really featured in the Palace Of Holyroodhouse Stakes at Royal Ascot after fluffing his lines at the start, but was much more competitive at Chester last time out, finishing second behind Calico Blue.
The winner that day has since gone close at Listed level, and Tricky Tel remains on the same mark of 89. The fast-starting Revival Power has been drawn on his immediate inside, which could allow Jason Hart to track that rival into the contest, before gunning for glory in the final furlong.
5:20pm York - Nursery Handicap Tips
I haven't got much of an opinion here. Most of the 22 runners have some sort of chance. I've backed Crystal Queen, Elevating and Super Tuscan at various times this season, and all three could be well handicapped. PERSIAN SPRING (20/1) seems particularly overpriced, given how well he won over this course and distance earlier in the campaign.
Richard Hannon's charge then finished down the field in the Norfolk Stakes, where he was slowly away and got a little outpaced. Persian Spring came out of the gates slowly again on his handicap debut at Glorious Goodwood, and couldn't make many inroads as Revels claimed a narrow victory.
Jamie Spencer rode Persian Spring much more prominently when he won here at York in May, and I'm hoping to see Pat Dobbs revert to those tactics on Wednesday. If Hannon's sprinter can get off to a decent start, I could see him mounting a strong challenge from a potentially favourable draw in stall four.
