Glorious Goodwood Day 4 Tips

1:50pm Goodwood - Goodwood Handicap Tips

Of all the handicap races staged during Glorious Goodwood, this is the one I get least involved in. I generally just have a small each-way bet on something at a big price, and KENTUCKY RIVER (16/1) is my speculative punt this year.

This son of Camelot progressed quickly when stepped up to staying trips on the Flat by Ollie Sangster. Kentucky River was narrowly beaten by a mid-90s-rated rival in Belgravian on his first crack at two miles, before clocking an RPR of 91 when claiming a seven-length victory at Pontefract last August.

Kentucky River then made the move to Olly Murphy's yard, and returns to the Flat having won two of his last three starts over handicap hurdles. After eight years of flag starts, organisers have reverted to starting stalls, and Kentucky River's berth in stall 18 could turn out to be a blessing, considering four horses won from wide stalls between 2011 and 2017.

2:25pm Goodwood - Thoroughbred Stakes Tips

He's not much of a price, but it's almost impossible to look beyond TALK OF NEW YORK (4/6) in this Group Three.

Charlie Appleby's rising star bolted up in the Heron Stakes at Sandown, and was fancied by many to cause an upset in the St James's Palace Stakes. William Buick's mount was exceptionally keen at Royal Ascot, which proved costly in the end, as Talk Of New York couldn't quite match Bow Echo and Gstaad for finishing speed.

Bow Echo and Gstaad fought out the finish in the Sussex Stakes on day two here at Goodwood, and the fourth from this year's St James's Palace Stakes, Power Blue, has bolted up in a Group Two since. Catullus will go forward and set a strong pace from stall five, which should help his market-leading stablemate settle well from stall four. Talk Of New York is impossible to oppose.

3:00pm Goodwood - Golden Mile Tips

TRIBAL CHIEF (8/1) messed up the start when fancied for this handicap 12 months ago, and could only finish sixth behind Rhoscolyn. David Menuisier's five-year-old made up for that defeat with a course-and-distance success the following month, and Tribal Chief kicked off this season with eye-catching thirds in both the Lincoln and the Victoria Cup.

Again on his most recent outing at Sandown, the start proved costly for Tribal Chief, who gave the field a huge head start before finishing sixth behind Indalo. I'm sure Menuisier has had one eye on the Golden Mile all season long, and Jamie Spencer comes in to take the ride. I'd have loved Menuisier's yard to be in better form, but if either of his runners goes close on Thursday, Tribal Chief's odds could begin to tumble.

Spencer will be pleased with his low draw in stall four, given that nine of the last 11 winners have come from stall five or lower. However, we have seen horses win from stalls 18 and 21 in recent years, so I'm also going to have a punt on TWO TEMPTING (28/1) from stall 15.

Jonny Portman's seven-year-old hasn't been seen since the end of the all-weather season. Two Tempting enjoyed a consistent winter on the synthetics, winning at Kempton in November before a series of placed efforts.

Two Tempting bumped into Blue Rc (now rated 104) at Southwell, and The Long King (now rated 102) at Wolverhampton, while giving both stacks of weight. Rob Hornby's mount also finished third from a wide draw in the Listed Tandridge Stakes, which was won by the odds-on favourite Chancellor.

Despite that excellent form, Two Tempting has remained on the same mark of 100. Portman was looking forward to a crack at this handicap last season, before the ground went against his seven-year-old. Two Tempting loves faster conditions, he loves a turning track, and his record after an absence is good. I can't let him go unbacked at 28/1.

4:10pm Goodwood - Bentinck Conditions Stakes Tips

With Boiling Point, Naqeeb and Galen in the field, I can't imagine that this conditions race will be run at a slow pace. DIVIDEND (9/1) could capitalise if the pace does collapse, provided he's bounced back from a poor effort at Sandown last time out.

Jamie Insole's four-year-old starred in Meydan over the winter, winning two nine-furlong handicaps, before second- and fifth-place finishes in the Singspiel Stakes and the Dubai Turf. Dividend then travelled nicely behind a red-hot pace in the Wolferton Stakes at Royal Ascot, where he kept on gamely through traffic to finish third behind the excellent Map Of Stars.

Kieran Shoemark's mount showed absolutely nothing when last behind Sallaal in the Gala Stakes at Sandown, where his efforts at Meydan and Ascot might have finally caught up with him. Insole has given his four-year-old a month off after that disappointing run, and Dividend is more than capable of mounting a challenge in this sort of company.

4:45pm Goodwood - Hawes & Curtis Nursery Handicap Tips

This race hasn't been kind to fancied horses in recent years, with 16/1, 20/1 and 22/1 winners in the last four seasons. One who seems overpriced to me is SUPER TUSCAN (16/1), who I backed when I was at Goodwood on John Smith's Cup day.

Eve Johnson Houghton's charge had impressed when flying home from the rear to score at Chepstow on his previous start. Super Tuscan travelled too strongly at York, fading from the front as Big Cigar came through to claim a commanding victory.

I'd be surprised if Charlie Bishop didn't ride Super Tuscan with a bit more restraint on Friday, and Eve Johnson Houghton has a good record with juveniles at this track. I'm not prepared to give up on this progressive grey just yet.

5:20pm Goodwood - World Pool Bet With The tote Handicap Tips

It was a bold move for Richard Hannon to run the three-year-old PEARL RIVER (10/1) in the John Smith's Cup, and Joe Leavy's mount could bounce back now pitched back in with his own age group.

A winner at Nottingham at two, Pearl River ran in the Blue Riband Trial and the London Gold Cup at the start of this season. Hannon's colt then won nicely over the John Smith's Cup trip at York, before battling back to challenge Gone By in a small-field renewal of the Bibury Cup at Salisbury at the end of June.

Pearl River took on battle-hardened older handicappers just two weeks after that narrow Bibury Cup defeat, and his inexperience showed at York as Joe Leavy's mount faded after sitting behind the pace. Hannon's three-year-old clearly takes his racing well, and still appears to be something of a work in progress. I fancy that this mark of 89 is still nowhere near Pearl River's ceiling.

5:55pm Goodwood - Fillies' Handicap Tips

Silver Lake dominates the market for this small-field handicap. I'd much rather side with the hugely progressive ROOM FOURTEEN (11/4), as James Fanshawe's filly bids to claim her fourth win in the space of five starts.

Room Fourteen scored on her handicap debut at Yarmouth in April, before losing out to Venetia in a very high-quality contest at Ascot. Fanshawe's filly bounced back to winning ways with a cosy victory at Redcar in June, and was last seen powering to another comfortable win at Doncaster.

Room Fourteen was beaten by a future Listed winner at Ascot, and had Nanino Nyati, a winner here this week, over a length behind her in fourth. Fanshawe's filly remains capable of further improvement, and the booking of Ryan Moore has to be hugely significant.
