St Helens are favourites in their Super League Round 22 clash with Hull FC, but recent form and head-to-head trends suggest this will be closer than expected. Despite just one win in five for Saints and Hull FC languishing in 13th, key attacking players on both sides and recent tight encounters highlight the value in backing Hull FC with a +12.5 handicap. Additionally, Joe Batchelor emerges as a strong anytime try-scorer pick, having scored three tries in his last four matches.

St Helens vs Hull FC Super League Round 22 Tips & Prediction

St Helens should do enough to keep their finals hopes alive on home soil, but Hull FC look well placed to keep this contest much closer than the bookmakers expect.

The Saints have won just one of their last five games and defensive issues have started to creep into their game, conceding 36 points per match across their last two outings. Meanwhile, Hull may be sitting 13th after five straight defeats, but they've remained competitive in most of those contests and continue to show positive signs through the middle of the field.

Jake Arthur's kicking game has become one of Hull's biggest weapons, consistently pinning opponents deep inside their own half, while Herman Ese'ese and Harvie Hill continue to win the middle battle. That combination should ensure Hull generates enough field position to stay in the contest throughout.

St Helens still deserve favouritism. Alex Walmsley's return gives them a huge boost through the middle, while Jack Welsby, Harry Robertson and Tristan Sailor have looked increasingly dangerous with the ball in hand over recent weeks.

However, recent meetings suggest this line is simply too big. The Saints' last three victories over Hull have all come by margins of 10 points or fewer (24-14, 16-10 and 13-6), making Hull +12.5 the standout betting play.

Joe Batchelor is also worth backing to continue his strong try-scoring form. The Hull back-rower has crossed for three tries in his last four games and should see plenty of quality ball running off Jake Arthur close to the line.

  • St Helens have won their last 10 home games against Hull FC
  • Hull's last away win over St Helens came in 2017
  • St Helens' last three wins over Hull have all been by 1-12 points
  • St Helens have won just one of their last five matches
  • Joe Batchelor has scored three tries in his last four appearances

The Saints enter this clash under enormous pressure after slipping to seventh on the ladder following last week's defeat to York.

They've managed just one win from their last five matches and now sit outside the top six heading into Round 22. While their attack has shown improvement with Jack Welsby leading a more expansive style, defensive lapses have become a major concern.

Alex Walmsley's return is a timely boost and should provide more go-forward through the middle, while the combination of Welsby, Harry Robertson and Tristan Sailor continues to improve.

Hull FC Form Analysis

Hull FC haven't won since mid-June but their recent performances have arguably been better than their results suggest.

The spine has developed more cohesion with Jake Arthur directing play well, while the forward pack continues to compete through Herman Ese'ese, Harvie Hill and Joe Batchelor.

Despite sitting 13th on the ladder, Hull have enough size, kicking game and attacking structure to trouble a Saints side lacking confidence.
