Sasnovich Looks to Reach First Tour-Level Quarterfinal Since 2025

Aliaksandra Sasnovich moved into the second round in Tokyo after defeating Nikola Bartunkova in three sets, 6-4, 6-7, 6-3. She had an early lead and a chance to close the match in straight sets but was forced to play a decider to secure the win.

She faced two solid opponents in qualifying earlier this week, defeating Yuliia Starodubtseva and Kamilla Rakhimova in straight sets. She will now look to reach her second quarterfinal in Tokyo, having previously achieved that result during her debut in 2016.

The Belarusian has cleared the opening-round hurdle on tour six times this year, but five of those campaigns ended without multiple wins. Her only successful run came at the season opener in Brisbane, where she reached the third round. She is now looking for her first tour-level quarterfinal since Cluj-Napoca in 2025.

Shnaider Looks to Extend Strong Asian Swing

Diana Shnaider is coming off a successful run in Ningbo last week, where she reached the semifinals before losing to Elena Rybakina. Along the way, she defeated top-20 players Alexandra Eala and Iva Jovic in the early rounds. She will look to build on that momentum this week.

The Russian struggled with consistency earlier this year, but her breakthrough run to the semifinals at Roland Garros boosted her confidence. She followed that up during the North American swing by reaching the quarterfinals in Toronto, the semifinals in Washington and the fourth round in Cincinnati.

She carried that momentum into Asia, reaching the third round in Beijing and the quarterfinals in Wuhan. Those results brought her close to her previous career-high ranking of 11 recently.

This is her third appearance in Tokyo. She reached the quarterfinals on her debut in 2024 and the second round in 2025.
