Jannik Sinner has announced he will miss the entire 2026 season, including the 2027 Australian Open, following a right knee injury. This development alters the tournament's outlook, positioning Carlos Alcaraz, the reigning champion, as the clear favorite to defend his title and potentially win his eighth Grand Slam. Alexander Zverev and Novak Djokovic remain in contention but have not matched Alcaraz's recent form. The article concludes that Alcaraz is perfectly placed for Australian Open success following Sinner's absence.

The 2027 Australian Open betting odds have shifted following Jannik Sinner's announcement that he won't play again in 2026.

Sinner won the tournament in 2024 and 2025 before Carlos Alcaraz broke through last year. Both players were expected to battle it out for another title in January.

I think that Sinner's announcement puts Alcaraz in prime position to defend his title and claim an eighth Grand Slam.

Sinner Out for the Season

Jannik Sinner hasn't played a competitive match since winning Wimbledon. He was expected to return to action in Shanghai but confirmed that he won't return in 2026 in order to recover from a right knee injury.

The Italian said: "Me together with the doctors have decided that I need a course of treatment for my knee... I will do everything possible to get back 100%."
The World No.1 will end the year with an impressive 44-3 record, winning six titles on all three surfaces. He is expected to be replaced by Alexander Zverev at the top of the rankings.

Alcaraz Back With a Bang

Carlos Alcaraz spent four months recovering from a wrist injury before returning to action at the US Open. He performed well, reaching the quarter-finals where he lost in 5 sets to Ben Shelton.

The Spaniard beat Taylor Fritz at the Laver Cup before winning the Japan Open. He had slow starts in all five wins but his class came through, especially in the final where he beat Jiri Lehecka 7-6 6-4.

The 23-year-old spoke after the victory in Tokyo: "It’s been a while, and obviously it is extra special after my injury. My comeback, in the second tournament that I’ve played, lifting a trophy means a lot.
"I’m really happy about it. A tough week. I didn’t find my best level, but I did find the good solutions, and I think that is what matters at the end.

"Playing the most important points the best you can. I think I did it this week. I would say today was the best match of the week, or at least more consistent, the level that I played."

The Contenders

Alexander Zverev claimed two Grand Slams in 2026 but avoided Sinner, Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic in both victories.

The German has a 4-11 record against Sinner, losing 10 straight encounters. He is 6-7 against Alcaraz and 5-10 against Djokovic.

Djokovic has won a record 10 Australian Open titles but hasn't won a Grand Slam since 2023. He won the China Open this week, his 102nd ATP Tour title.
It would be no surprise to see him go deep in Melbourne, but at 39-years-old, he has continually come up short in the grueling two week tournaments.

Ben Shelton deserves to be in the conversation after reaching the US Open final, but it remains to be seen if he is ready to break through on the big stage.

Verdict

Sinner's injury means he won't be fully fit for the Australian Open. Coupled with the hot and humid conditions in Melbourne and his previous problems in severe heat, I am ruling him out.

Zverev will surely be the World No.1 sooner rather than later. but he has done it with Sinner and Alcaraz spending significant amounts of time recovering from injuries.

Djokovic hasn't won a Grand Slam in three years and I can't see the veteran getting it done in 2027.

Alcaraz will have plenty of time to fine tune his game with Masters events in Shanghai and Paris coming up before the ATP Finals ends the season in November.

The Spaniard is perfectly placed to defend his Australian Open title and claim an eighth Grand Slam.
