Kalinina, buoyed by her Billie Jean King Cup success, faces Tjen in a match where both players have something to prove. Kalinina’s confidence is tempered by her difficulties away from clay courts, opening the door for Tjen despite her own inconsistency this year. With both athletes needing to overcome recent weaknesses, Tjen has a realistic opportunity to take advantage and progress. The match is expected to be a close contest, hinging on which player can overcome their vulnerabilities on the day.

Janice Tjen Looks To Make Better Use Of Beijing Return

Janice Tjen chose to play the WTA 500 event in Guadalajara a few weeks ago instead of defending her runner-up points in Sao Paulo, but she failed to go deep as she lost to Sloane Stephens in straight sets in the second round.

The 24-year-old has a negative win-loss record this year, winning only 17 of the 42 matches she has played. Her only multiple main-draw wins this year came in Dubai, where she reached the third round.

She made her debut here in Beijing last year but lost to Aleksandra Sasnovich from a set up. She will be looking for a better result this week.

Kalinina Looks To Build On Her Top-50 Return

Anhelina Kalinina played in the Billie Jean King Cup final a few days ago, where she won her first two matches to help her team reach the final before losing to Karolina Muchova in the decisive tie against the Czech Republic.

The Ukrainian started the 2026 season after missing six months during the second half of 2025 due to injury. She initially struggled, but once the clay season began, she found her level, reaching four consecutive WTA 125 finals, along with a tour-level final in Rabat, the third round in Madrid and the quarterfinals in Hamburg.

These results helped her return to the top 50 in the rankings. However, since the clay season ended, she has struggled to replicate those performances in recent months.

Verdict

Kalinina heads into this match with some confidence after her Billie Jean King Cup performances, but her struggles away from clay give Tjen a good chance. Despite Tjen’s own inconsistency this year, she has an opportunity to come through this clash.
